This floodplain fen in the Billingham Beck Valley produced a few new 10km square water beetle records today, including Hydraena britteni (πŸ“·), characteristic of this habitat. Though very urban this is a relatively extensive tract of wetland with lots of potential for interesting invertebrates.

Strikes were common in Britain before, during & after World War I, despite government efforts to suppress them through The Defence of the Realm Act (DORA). Munitions workers, engineers & miners focused on wages, poor housing & lack of affordable medical care for all.

Black workers in the USA struck during WWII; demanding equal pay/promotions, exemplified by Detroit's Packard plant walkouts against discrimination. These actions highlighted racial inequality in defence industries; leading to government intervention & triggering a pulse for Civil Rights Movement.

I perused Howard Zinn's 'A People's History of the United States' (pub. 1980: updated 2003) in the 1980s: documented voices of slaves, indigenous people, immigrant workers, etc., which provide social history insight revealing the war crimes of the self-appointed US-Congress 1776-90.
