If you have an interest in SOTL and reflexivity you might be interested in this talk mymedia.leeds.ac.uk/Mediasite/Pl... where i discuss scholarship as a potential remedy against various forms of deceit, epistemic vices (especially those now considered virtues in neoliberal universities)

Oh that's very nice to hear, thank you. I'm glad you found the book of interest and I'd be very interested to know what colleagues think of it, if you manage to get a reading group going.

Imagine the banality of a university where the only ratified areas of study are β€˜complex analysis’ and β€˜critical thinking’. Thinking about what? We have already seen what happens when we unleash a cadre of overrated, narrowly-educated adolescents whose only thought is of their own exceptionalism.

I'm not expert on these matters... having read an article where the author berates the field for not acknowledging their contribution to the field (in so many words) their article includes 30% self-citation. I know average %s vary depending on the field and status of the academic but seems odd to me

Leading universities urged to take no more than 10% of students from private schools Expanding access to Oxbridge and other leading institutions would boost social mobility, say authors of new book

www.theguardian.com/education/20... It would be interesting to know the socio-economic backgrounds of academic staff and how many had been educated in private schools. And whether there are disciplinary differences in staff privately educated

sounds interesting! The book is pretty dark in places - well the first half - but it does offer something more positive and something we hope to talk about this year at Leeds and elsewhere.

🧡It was a pleasure to write this with Laetitia and she was very much the architect of this book. I’m glad I could contribute to it. It was also uncomfortable to write as we came to arguments and conclusions that we think will provoke. A short extract ...

🧡We have tried to discuss social justice and Higher Education by considering the role of language ontology, of ethics and social theory, and of pedagogy. We use social semiotics and Bourdieu's field theory to address these issues.

🧡It’s an uncomfortable read and as we write β€˜the opinion and judgments expressed in the volume might go against readers’ positions, or unquestioned thoughts’.

agreed! and just using only first names when talking about colleagues (usually senior) in a meeting (clearly indicating the status and social/professional circle of the person name dropping)
