To this day I believe you would be hard pressed to find an employee of either company who could tell you the definitive difference between Optum and UHC. They really only use the distinction to appear smaller than they are. So people don't realize they are number 5 on the fortune 500 list.

I don't know if an app like what was described to me was ever made at the company as I was laid off a month later. Part of a series of mass lay offs of thousands of people all while they were boasting record profits.

My boss was a great guy from what I could tell, but I never felt that the higher ups at the company totally understood the fatal flaws in that kind of technology. It was a "just make it work" development environment with very few checks and balances for quality, at least on the teams I worked on.

I remember our team essentially saying that for a number of reasons this was unethical. Letting a LLM have access to protected healthcare data is scary as it is, but LLMs also have a chance to hallucinate and tell the user exactly what they want to hear.

He wanted us to use Chatgpt as a chatbot to navigate our confusing apps. I thought it was a great idea at the time because the concept of a chatbot that could route people seemed like a novel solution. However, I misunderstood. What he actually meant was to make a chatbot that gave users data.

Seemed like something that came down from high in the corporate ladder cuz everyone was dealing with the same thing. I was on an R&D team at the time and I was working on ways to better navigate our ever growing number of complicated apps. My boss came to us at the time and said he had an idea.

I used to work for UnitedHealth Group, specifically at the technology side of the company Optum. I remember in early 2023, when chatgpt and LLMs began to shoot up in popularity, that everything I was working on got reevaluated for possible "AI implementations".
