Because authoritarian regimes need to be in control of all messaging. Why they made news orgs capitulate; why they made universities capitulate; why they put apparatchiks instead of experts in fed agencies. This smaller act is in line with that.

But the last thing you want your vulnerable child to be is fearful when they separate from you with no idea who to trust. These actions abrogate that trust and it's horrifying what they did to this kid and his mom.

I had a close cousin with intellectual disabilities and she was taught from an early age that if she got separated from one of us, she should get a cop. I know the calculus has always been different for POC parents with disabled kids.
