My middle kid’s favorite part of Halloween is giving out candy. So he’s dressing up as the Baba Yaga house and going to roam the neighborhoods, handing out candy instead of waiting here for the few trick or treaters we get. All his idea. He’s so fucking sweet sometimes.

I love this for you. So many creepy (complementary) memories around those books!

Oh, I see your comment! They’re super pristine for their age πŸ’•

We were literally just talking about this in my office today! Also, these have to be older than 25 years? I definitely read them as a pre-teen, and I am almost 45!

Pomodoro method writing break time! I'm doing my preferred "Just get something on the fucking page" method. It starts with me literally writing "This paragraph should be about <blah>" for all the things I think I need to talk about, and then put in logical order, filling gaps, and link citations

"properly shopped" is just so fucking offensive. Oh? How far do you think <$100 goes at Costco?

My husband bought his house for $75k on the northern edge of Dallas when he was 21! Making $30k in the late 90s. Almost all our ability to have financial choices is due to that event! My kids have absolutely no chance of that happening!

Discovered I can buy used version of my kidβ€˜s glasses frames off eBay for ~$20. His frames take a beating, but the lenses have held up really well, so hopefully I can just have the optometrist swap the lenses into the non-wonky frames.

Arctic cold forces higher summits of N.H. into the stratosphere For a brief time, summits like Mount Washington were actually in the stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere that sits just above the troposphere.

This Mt. Washington? People are dumb!

This is probably less of a lawyer question and more of a Parks & Wildlife state agency question.

They also use donations to stock - few shelves in the hallway with easy food for high schoolers to grab. Oatmeal packets, Mac & cheese cups, granola bars, etc.

Missoula County Public Schools has gift card wish list at Walmart and target. every school has a resource closet, and they give them to kids and families who need food or toiletries or any other kind of support. I’ve also given grocery gift cards. www.walmart.com/registry/ER/...

I agree! Not sure if the undergrads appreciate just how much information you can get from them though.

Exactly? Drinking coffee and getting ready to go teach some undergrads how to read river hydrographs.

An old map from World Geography 1948 showing hog population in the US. β€œEach dot represents 5000 hogs.” The problem is that the US is displayed as a white object against a solid black background and black state outlines. The comments include β€œUntapped infinite hog supply in the ocean,” β€œEach state is lined with an impenetrable wall of swine. We are trapped.” And β€œWe’ve lost Canada and Mexico to the hogs already”

Hog farming also made an appearance, so this map became our pre-talk slide.

One of my favorite projects I did during grad school was an epic interdisciplinary exploration of the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. we had a geomorphologist (me), a journalist, an ecologist, and a economist. That MS river map featured prominently in my portion.

I realized we might be at this level with my teenager and chili crisp. I think we have at least 4 types in the fridge right now…

Yeah, I wash the cellulose sponges with our regular kitchen towel/rag load!

Weird! We’re semi-arid here though, so maybe that makes a difference.

No, but we have 4 people, including 2 teenagers in the house, so we go through it quickly. It’s good for at least 4-6 weeks in the fridge, and we always use a full block at a time, so we don’t have opened packages to try and save.

27.10.2025 00:53 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, I think this is a vocabulary mismatch. To wash dishes I use
a scrubby sponge, but I’ve seen some of the flat cellulose ones labeled as β€œSwedish dishclothβ€œ

Also, most schools have a β€œresource cabinet” that some students rely on for weekend food or toiletries. Usually they have wish lists set up at Walmart or Target, and they’ll always take grocery gift cards! Not as efficient as the food bank, but meets a need where it exists!

The fluffy rags are black because that way I don’t have to try and get out stains. When I lived in Texas, I could just bleach white rags in the sun, but in Montana, the sun’s not strong enough! (And they’re the small square size, because they fit perfectly in front of my espresso machine!)
