We need to see urgent action from the Government to introduce safeguards to limit how the police can use facial recognition, and to protect all of us from abuse of power as we go about our daily lives.

Fixed facial recognition cameras have gone live for the first time in Croydon β οΈ
The Gov plan to expand police use of this dangerous tech across the UK, with no laws or safeguards in place to protect us.
Polling shows that 86% of people believe everyone has the right to voice their opinion and raise awareness of issues.
We should all get to decide how we keep ourselves safe at protests.

This law is supposed to βcatch criminalsβ.
But will actually criminalise innocent people who may wear face coverings for religious, cultural, medical, or privacy reasons.
Such as Muslim women, disabled people, and political dissidents.
BACK IN PARLIAMENT TODAY: The Crime and Policing Bill.
The Lords will soon be voting on plans to ban face coverings at protests.
If passed, police will have the power to create βno mask zonesβ at designated demos and arrest those who donβt comply.

Our polling shows 1 in 4 people who support facial recognition would change their minds if it was made permanent in their own area.
It is urgent the Government develops safeguards to protect us all. Join our campaign - action.libertyhumanrights.org.uk/page/167674/...
The Home Office have said that they will consider a legal framework to govern the use of facial recognition technology. But this dangerous tech is still being rolled out across the country with no regulation over its use.

β οΈ Introducing new powers to restrict our fundamental right to protest is not the answer
During times of fear people understandably want to see action, but restricting protest further is likely to fuel tensions by taking away legal and safe ways for people to make their voices heard

Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to change how judges interpret the European Convention on Human Rights β a move that risks weakening everyoneβs protections.Β Β
The ECHR has become a convenient scapegoat for challenges around migration and sovereignty.

In times of fear people understandably want action - but restricting protest is likely to fuel tensions by removing legal and safe ways for people to be heard.
Being able to use protest to challenge govts and stand up for what we believe in is central to a healthy democracy. It must be upheld.
Police already have huge powers to restrict protests.
Handing them more would undermine our rights further while failing to keep people safe from violence like the horrific and heartbreaking anti-Semitic attack in Manchester.
