Today on #MandelaDay we honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
It is a day to take time to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and commit to making a positive impact in our own communities.

We remember the Soweto children shot down by police on 16June1976 at a mammoth peaceful protest, and the 1000 others killed in the resulting year-long uprising. It mobilised a generation. On the 10th anniversary in 1986 the Glasgow home of the apartheid Consulate was renamed Nelson Mandela Place.

On 12th June 1988 30,000 people marched through Glasgow with the Anti-Apartheid Movement and rallied on Glasgow Green to call for the release of Nelson Mandela for his 70th birthday. Oliver Tambo, Trevor Huddleston, Alan Boesak, Andimba Toivo ja Toivo, Abdul Minty and others addressed the crowd.

We salute his memory and his inspiration for us all.

Condolences on the death of Sam Nujoma who fought for Namibia's freedom from apartheid S. African occupation, and then was first President of free Namibia. Brian Filling was Chair of Anti-Apartheid in Scotland, which campaigned on Namibia for many years and hosted the 1987 visit.

We mourn his death.

On 11 Feb 1990, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison, after 27 years. He had only narrowly avoided a death sentence but had been ready to accept this. To overturn apartheid South Africa many were prepared to give everything. This courage inspired ACTSA to be formed soon after Mandela became President

11th. Feb. is 35 years since Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison for defying apartheid, a decisive step towards the first free election in 1994. In Glasgow the crowd that gathered in Nelson Mandela Place to celebrate grew so large that the street was closed. See bit.ly/NM11-2-90

In 1923 it became the African National Congress. It was the main liberation movement in South Africa until the first free election in 1994, which made Nelson Mandela President.

A key part of our work is to fund and erect a statue of Mandela in Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow, once the site of the Consulate of apartheid S.
