I guess what bothers me about the whole "what do I want from open world racing games" bit, is that I've tried just enough games to have something to fill a niche (Ridge Racer 6, Burnout Paradise, kart racers, dirt rally), but not enough to know if I'd like something even more.

Yeah, give it a try! You get into the action pretty quick and once you've sampled the different events, you know what to expect for the rest of the game. There's a lot of it.

They're remaking you for a modern audience. Yeah, sorry man. They're giving you a hyper realistic art style with no reverence for how your original color grading or art design looked. Your boss fights have new shitty mechanics and they redid all of your iconic voice acting. Your studio got laid off

This is a pretty funny strategy to pull off in multiplayer races, but it's just as funny in single player challenges that limit your turbo uses. It only accounts for regular boosts (brake > accel > accel), which means reverse boosts (accel > brake > brake) reward anyone who finds a setup for it.

Well ok, I can think of one thing. I saw some footage of a car game with vast open fields and I quickly started to appreciate the mixture of city intersections and less populated hill / coastside routes with big jumps.

I can appreciate the stunt runs for the variety at least. When I was playing the game, I struggled to think what else I would want from an open world car racing game. This game has enough variety and scale to scratch an itch for high speed arcade style flavor. Anything else? I'm not sure... 😅

I was kind of surprised to learn that the game *does* have an anti-repetition mechanic in place. But it seems fairly easy to not trigger it even in big surf island dlc which is a much smaller area compared to the base game.

Also - these staff ghosts can be pretty damn hard! Some of them are pushovers, but a few are like, a second off the WR times...

(this isn't one of those, but it was still a tough one)

Stunt runs are cool in theory, and interesting during discovery phase. But then once I learned a decent route, they really weren't all that engaging. I feel the last combo mechanic that persists during time out takes away from the experience. Maintain the combo with small boosts and it'll be ok.

I let the game idle while I was making dinner, and it started showing b-roll camera footage of the nearby areas while classical orchestra music was playing. What a vibe, man.

One of the races had me race across the map to northeast side, and the first thing I did was take a right turn and go for a streamlined route across a highway with no opponents. In an open world car game, a race can turn into a time trial.

Had an itch for some car gameplay, so I played Burnout Paradise on PS3. The combination of more relaxed handling, high speed, route selection and a variety of events really hit the spot. Could've been a dummy live service title today, but no, you just get a world with stuff to do and it's fun.💯

not really interested in the way bluepoint is being eulogised as a singular artist, to mourn the products they could have made for Sony, the games they could have done bad remakes of.

the tragedy here is that people lost their jobs. it’s always that people have lost their jobs.

we don’t have to make every studio exceptional to make them worthy of being mourned, that should be a given. bluepoint folding doesn’t mean we suddenly gotta reappraise demon’s souls remake as good, the studios that make bad games deserve to have livelihoods too!!!

I think so, yeah! Aside from re-releases, it doesn't seem like their catalog has a whole lot of turn-based combat going on right now...

That being said, it's interesting to look at MH Stories 1 plot with this kind of jaded stance on the series now. Adult hunters being afraid of kids who can connect spiritually and emotionally with monsters. Maybe the game has been criticizing people like me all along.

That's why I'm not interested in seeing legacy monsters make comebacks in the series. I don't mind a few for maintaining series aesthetic, but I rarely like fighting returning monsters more or as much as their debut appearance. I've been conditioned to think of them as boss fights first.
