Slightly amused that the number of private schools has actually risen. That isn’t what someone with a vested interest was saying in the other place last week.

Others have noted that this means foreign-born people are LESS likely than UK-born people to be in prison. What I want to note is that The Times is now referring to foreign-born UK citizens as ‘foreigners’. This includes Boris Johnson, Sir Mo Farah, Emma Watson, Rory Stewart and little old me.

Perfectly understandable that victims may be concerned about the force investigating its former officers. But Op Stovewood has meant 200 specialist NCA officers for R’ham for the last decade. Other historic inquiries in other places will need similar. A big long term national resource.

I agree with the jist of this. Worth remembering that historic CSE offences have been being investigated by the NCA rather than SYP for the last decade (& SYP is a much improved force). Challenge for govt remains effectiveness of IOPC, and investigations capacity if other places follow R’ham.

This is a very good piece - and lots of thoughts on it.

The key part for me is the line about 'hard edged fairness' and how it's 'fairness' rather than racism which is driving much of the wider popular discontent around immigration/asylum.

This also gives us a way to combat it.

A year on from the Manvers rioting, I spoke to @jenwilliamsft.bsky.social about where we are now - the flashpoint rightly removed, but the atmosphere more poisonous. An asylum system that works well would be part of the “hard edged fairness” that restores public confidence and undermines extremism.
