Everything written from scratch in plain ES6, no frameworks/dependencies. Syncing backend server in Go.

note-taking software doesn't need to be bloated or slow! (yes this is actual 1x speed πŸ”₯)

CSS is my favorite graphics editor. Explored if launching with a desktop app would be feasible for V1, worked on some desktop app icons today

Not really. Local-first is becoming more popular, but the cloud-part is usually not self-hostable or doesn't allow easily switching back and forth.

I guess any backend should work as long as it's possible to run it on both the cloud and a local machine (which excludes Vercel, I think)

And it runs anywhere, so you can run it on a cheap VPS, your Linux server or even your Windows laptop, why not.

Self-hosting Thymer will be super easy. Just one file. Run "thymer config". Answer a few questions. Done! No dependencies, no npm, no Docker, no spinners, no humongous downloads.

Ejectable Apps

We should make cloud-based apps not just local-first, but ejectable as well: make the backend sync server available for local self-hosting. That way users have guaranteed access to both their data and the service forever. More at thymer.com/ejectable-apps

Thymer

Hello Bluesky πŸ‘‹ wcools on X, thought I'd give this a try as well! I'm a bootstrapped founder, mainly posting about tech and design. Launched and running Papyrs since waaay back in 2010, now also working on building our new app Thymer.com (and finally finished the new landing page today! :)
