A bead of sweat trails down my forehead as I walk towards the door. What in the world could be so urgent at four pm on a Monday? I have half a mind to chew out whoever’s on the other side of that door. Probably more missionaries trying to convince me to join their church or some salesman peddling insurance I have no need for. I throw the door open with a bag, my protest already on my lips. “No, I have no interest in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and– Kira?” The sight of her makes me freeze. She looks so put together that I’m suddenly embarrassed to be greeting her in sweats and a tank top. Her blonde waves are pulled up in a well-styled bun, held together by a carefully positioned clip. I have the irrational urge to get rid of that stupid clip and wrap her hair around my fist instead. God, what the hell is it about this girl? Okay, it definitely doesn’t hurt that her short pumps and navy pencil skirt are making her legs look fantastic, but I completely forget how to function around her. She offers me a hesitant smile. “I was considering converting to Satanism myself.” “And you need me to do what? He’s still alive, for one, and he’s got a lucrative trade as a nightrunner smuggling people beneath the vampiric horde that blots out the sky each night. It's dangerous work, but enough to get a roof over his head and a bottle in his hand at the end of the day. That’s pretty good for life under the vampires. Then an attack from the horde leaves him stuck in the desert, alone with a newly-orphaned boy, and his luck finally dries up. He resolves to find what remains of the boy’s family and put it all behind him—but instead of taking him off Corado’s hands, his so-called “family” offers a new deal: escort them to the vampiric capital in exchange for a veritable fortune. Corado knows he shouldn’t. It’s a long, dangerous route, and the group has a smack of sedition to them that he knows firsthand to be a quick way to a bloody death.
