As much as the Hebrew Bible has usually been seen as a source of world literature, we also have much to learn from seeing it as an example of it. In particular the Torah's emphatically woven quality can offer a uniquely illuminating view into ancient ideas and practices of literary production.Seeing its literary form as an example of a global phenomenon suggests that the Torah may be the clearest instance of a remarkably cross-culturally pervasive image for literary creativity: the *textile* mode of production. Rather than the medical metaphor of a scalpel, or the animist metaphor of a living community, cultures from Babylon to Greece and Medieval Europe have used the image of weaving, intertwining, or knotting words together to form a text (literally, โwoven thingโ). Sophus Helle* recently argued that this may be the most productive way to theorize authorship historically, a โmiddle groundโ between pure originality, with the lone genius who creates everything ex nihilo, and pure convention, a text as entirely a function of its history and environment. *Helle, 2019. โWhat Is an Author? Old Answers to a New Question.โ Modern Language Quarterly 80: 113โ39.

It does seem like a lot of this turns on what โmeansโ means. lol.
I will say, IMHO, Fee was greatly helped by the fact that he was Pentecostal, and thus pro โcontinuing revelationโ. ๐ Iโm not sure thatโs true of the account that originally quoted him tho. ๐คจ
I lit have an 8 and 5yo. The younger hasnโt seen it, but the older one was convulsing the other day on the airplane to #sblaar24 and when I turned to look at her, I was relieved to see that she was watching Home Alone with her headphones and laughing so hard no sound was forthcoming. ๐

#SBLAAR24 folks: come join me at 1pm at the Omni for an excellent invited panel on everyoneโs (least) favorite verse, Gal 3:28.
There will be puns! There will be pithy side comments! Thereโs a rogue Bill Clinton reference!
Thanks for being there and supporting! ๐
