Were Shepherds Despised Outcasts in Jesus’s time? With the Christmas season approaching, I thought I'd share what I discovered when looking at the ancient evidence behind the claim that shepherds were despised outcasts in first-century Israel.

25+ Biblical Roles for Biblical Women - Marg Mowczko Many Bible women were not as restricted as we are sometimes led to believe.

In this blog post from my archives, I've listed roles and activities of Bible women, roles other than that of wife and mother.

Many Bible women were not as restricted or as passive as we are sometimes led to believe.

The Queen of Sheba and 3 more Female Rulers in the Bible - Marg Mowczko There were powerful women in Bible times.

I was reminded of the Queen of Sheba today. She is mentioned in 1 Kings 10:1–13 and 2 Chronicles 9:1–12 in the Hebrew Bible as well as in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament.

Here are a few words about her and three other powerful women in the Bible.

Is Adam solely responsible for the first sin? - Marg Mowczko Paul uses the literary device of typology in Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15.

"... just as sin entered the world through one person, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people ..."

Some use Romans 5 to say that Adam is responsible for the first sin, but this interpretation misses how and why Paul uses the example of Adam.

Passing Grammar Notes: Gender & voice with marriage, divorce, adultery A few days ago, the Classics Blog, Sententiae Antiquae, had a lovely piece on how language, grammar, and gender often intersect. A man marries, a woman gets married, but what about divorce & ad…

In several NT verses, γαμέω in the active voice for ♂️, and γαμίσκω in the middle/passive voice for ♀️, reflects how marriage was spoken of in ancient Greek.

See “A Man Marries, a Woman Gets Married” here:

Are Men Accountable for their Wives' Actions? - Marg Mowczko Are men accountable for their wives' actions? This article looks at the accountability of Adam and Eve and of Ananias and Sapphira.

Sapphira should not have plotted with her husband.
She should have been like Abigail, Rebekah, and Jael who each worked against their husbands' wishes.

Abigail: A Bible Woman with Beauty and Brains - Marg Mowczko Abigail helped her husband by going against his wishes.

Three Old Testament women went against their husbands' wishes but are not criticised; in fact, they are commended. Abigail is the clearest example of this.

1. In early Latin translations of the New Testament, and in the Vulgate, the Greek word "authentein," used in 1 Timothy 2:12, is translated as "dominari" ("to dominate"). These translations were done when Koine Greek, the language of the New Testament, was still a living language.

Beth Allison Barr on the Reformation’s Role in Limiting Women - Marg Mowczko The Reformation limited women. It is "a story of loss rather than a story of gain, of increased subordination rather than of liberation."

October 31 is Reformation Day.
Good things came from the Reformation, but the way the church regarded women was not one of them.

The Witch of Endor, the Dead Prophet, the Doomed King - Marg Mowczko It is remarkable that the witch of Endor, who dealt in the occult, is portrayed in a sympathetic light in 1 Samuel 28. What is going on here?

It's that time of the year when I share this post.

I'm fascinated by this story of an outcast woman and the dilemmas it raises!

Authentein Archives - Marg Mowczko The Greek word authentein (from the verb authenteō) was an uncommon word in the first century and occurs just once in the Bible. What does it mean in 1 Tim?

Authentein (Greek), katakurieuō (Greek), and dominari (Latin) is bad behaviour for men and for women, including church leaders.

4. "Katakurieuō" occurs in Jesus's speech when he warns his disciples not to "lord it over" other people like the rulers of the Gentiles (Matt. 20: 25-26; Mark 10:42-43).

Jerome, the main translator of the Vulgate, understood "authentein" as having a similar meaning to "katakurieuō."

3. A participle of the Latin word "dominari" is also used in 1 Peter 5:3 in the Vulgate. This is where elders are warned not to "lord it over" fellow believers in their congregations.

"Dominari" is a translation of the Greek word "katakurieuō" in 1 Peter 5:3.

Authentein as Bad Behaviour in Ancient Texts - Marg Mowczko I outline 3 reasons why authentein in 1 Tim 2:12 refers to domineering behaviour.

2. Paul was not simply saying that a woman (or, wife) should not have authority over a man (or, her husband). He was addressing the problem of an Ephesian woman (or women) who was dominating a man in some way.
