Huge thank you to Yichi Zhang (UGA), Harlee DiNello (UGA), & @emilyqr.bsky.social for their major contributions to this project!

The takeaway:

Black & Hispanic youth see STEM as worthwhile, but concerns about cost and confidence may hold them back.

πŸ‘‰ To broaden STEM career participation, we must highlight STEM’s value and reduce these motivational barriers.

Pfiat euch, Graz! ✨

Key findings:
✨ Most salient motivators = value beliefs (STEM careers were seen as useful, important, interesting to pursue)

🚧 Most salient barriers = cost (time/effort) + low confidence (esp among Hispanic girls)

We qualitatively coded responses using situated expectancy-value theory to see:

πŸ‘‰ which beliefs were most salient in their minds
πŸ‘‰ whether patterns differed by gender Γ— race/ethnicity

This year I presented on racially marginalized Black & Hispanic HS students’ motivational beliefs toward STEM careers.

πŸ”Ž We asked ~400 students to write about their perceived benefits & challenges of pursuing STEM.

The who and how of STEM career models in high school - Social Psychology of Education Successful individuals with careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, or STEM career models, are often used to encourage students towards pursuing STEM careers. However, exi...

3/Findings offer new insights for educators and equity-focused STEM programs.

If we want to broaden career participation in STEM, we need to rethink how we use role modelsβ€”starting with who students actually see. 🀩

2/Spoiler 🚨: It’s not always who you think. Most students named someone they already knowβ€”not a celebrity or scientist from the media.

We dig into what makes these everyday models inspiring, how this varies for students from different groups, & how models are tied to students’ STEM motivation πŸ”
