The problem with labbing cool networking ideas? Rabbit holes. Every step along the way, thereโ€™s another โ€œOh! Wouldnโ€™t it be better if I integrated โ€ขthisโ€ข idea?โ€ Taking the red pill leads to a fun day of network geekery, but doesnโ€™t get me any closer to the original goal. 1/2

Discovering that something is a DNS problem rather than a network problem feels goodโ€ฆ until we learn to accept the fact that DNS is a fundamental network service. If itโ€™s DNS, itโ€™s the network. The real joy comes from it not being โ€ขmyโ€ข networkโ€™s DNS thatโ€™s at fault. #NetEng #DNS

After two weeks of banging my head against this multicast routing lab, I finally found the problem. The default TTL for โ€ขallโ€ข multicast packets on Linux is 1. Of course, I overlooked the simple stuff in my troubleshooting, as one does. #NetEng #Multicast #Troubleshooting #LessonLearned #ThereAreDays

I havenโ€™t played extensively with multicast routing for a little over a decade, but here I am grinding the rust off of the metal. Gotta stay fresh if I want to engage in silly proof-of-concept labs. #NetEng #Milticast #Labbing #WorthIt

โ€œSomething went wrong. Please try again later.โ€ as an error message is about as helpful as โ€œItโ€™s broken.โ€ is. Not only is the first part so vague that itโ€™s useless to anyone who might be able to help, but we โ€ขknowโ€ข that trying again later is unlikely to work either. #Grr

Jody Lemoine ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ (@ghostinthenet@hachyderm.io) Is it just me, or have technical forums devolved to the point where every question about if thereโ€™s a way to do something produces responses asking the OP to justify their reasons for wanting to do it...

To those who keep asking, no. Iโ€™m not worried about ANI taking my job. Well, no more so than I am about my screwdrivers taking my job. The practitioner is always more than the sum of their tools. #AI

I would place businesses above 1,000 employees in the ultra-large category. Thatโ€™s 500 above large, which is already the top 0.3% of businesses. Networking practitioners would be anyone specialized in networking. I agree that thereโ€™s a critical mass needed for those, but how much?

If (approximately) one in four people are employed by ultra-large businesses, do networking practitioners have a similar distribution? My experience in discussions with my peers indicates that weโ€™re skewed heavily toward that market, perhaps four in five or even nine in ten. #NetEng

The products of #AI arenโ€™t subject to copyright. Does this mean organizations who are vibe coding have no intellectual rights to the results? Iโ€™m thinking the answer is yes. If Iโ€™m right, I now wonder if these organizations have considered thisโ€ฆ or have they been too caught up in the hype?

It absolutely does. Then again, the bulk of HTTPS/QUIC requests go to servers that host multiple sites, so IP literals are becoming less and less useful.
