Rivian just published this support article on leasing. I wonder how soon R2 leasing opens up. Also, we've had no changes to lease states in a long time.

The driving dynamics are completely different with RWD vs AWD and that's a completely new engineering effort that needs to happen. I don't see how that comes in 2026 with them laser focused on the AWD variant.

PSA: Rivian has never shipped a RWD consumer vehicle - only the EDV is single motor today. Making the $45,000 R2 isn't simply removing a motor. They have to also source/tune a cheaper/smaller battery, strip many of the premium finishes, and figure out vehicle propulsion.

Rivian will be going very cautious with the rollout of personal level 4 autonomy. Geofenced.

The AWD EDV with 30% more range would put it between 200 to 210 miles. I'd also expect them to bundle Gen 2 enhancements such as heat pump and maybe not an LFP pack so it handles better in the winter. This is a huge win for Amazon - Rivian's largest shareholder and partner.

I interpretted this as you'll see pricing/options for R2 and possible configurations on the new website on March 12th. However, the invitation to use the full configurator to order your R2 for delivery comes when your reservation # gets called.

Rivian now has a patent on the R2 "vehicle exterior". This patent has a ton of pictures of it if you're looking to make any fancy artwork or models.

So this is now patented by Rivian.

I believe the perforated seats, wood, many speakers, and more make the launch R2 have a "premium" interior aka upgrade aka $$$. I do expect this to be push the ASP higher by making it mandatory in the launch edition.

Rivian will take all the cost savings they got with R2 and put them into R1. They will use the economies of scale of R2 to do some part sharing across R1/R2 to increase the margins on R1. With 2026 being the year of R2 and R1 2027 coming up quick, I don't see this until next year.

The frequent question I get is "when will R1 get R2 features?". With R2 coming out in the next 4 months and being the priority, I don't see the R1 getting much R2 features this year - model year cutover to R1 2027 will probably happen in June/July.

Part/complexity reduction means less can go wrong with R2.

With R2 just around the corner, I’m expecting the R1 Standard to be removed from the lineup in the coming year(s). The price and capabilities are too close to a top end R2 - except for space. Also, the imported battery pack and COGS make it a loser compared to the higher trim (margin) variants.

Rivian R2 having a Large battery pack implies there's also a Max battery pack. If they use a play out of the R1 playbook, they will have higher density cell from LGES fit in the same space. Rivian's Large and Max packs on R1 were physically the same, but Large was 135 kWh and Max was 145 kWh.
