What is the most profitable industry in the world, this side of the law? Not oil, not IT, not pharma.

It's *scientific publishing*.

We call this the Drain of Scientific Publishing.

Warning. ⚠️ If you are writing an NSF GRFP, new this year, you need official transcripts to apply. Beware. They will not review applications without official transcripts. ‼️

A watercolor illustration showing the modern cultivars of squash descended from the ancestral Cucurbita pepo. C. pepo is in the middle, depicted as a round-ish speckled squash ripening from green to yellow-orange. Acorn squash, zucchini, pumpkin, delicata, pattypan, and yellow squash surround it in a circle, each connected to C. pepo by a line, like spokes in a wheel. Illustration by Ferris Jabr.

Cucurbita pepo is one of the oldest domesticated species. Over millennia, it has proved astoundingly versatile.

Just as Brassica oleracea gave us broccoli, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts etc, C. pepo morphed into the pumpkin, zucchini, delicata, pattypan, acorn, yellow squash and more!

The GRFP announcement from NSF cuts out an entire cohort of 2nd year students from consideration, without warning. This is so deeply unfair that it warrants a formal protest from the scientific community. If someone wants to work with me to craft an open letter and solicit signatures, LMK.

I think it will be complex due to time lags (ecological conditions --> evolutionary response) and complexity of the genetic basis (recessiveness, structure of genetic variation...) so a general pattern is unlikely.
As for variation itself, it can destabilize coexistence see 10.1111/ele.12618
