There is a definite push to become circular within this industry. I see one of the challenges being how loud a voice will the circular agenda have, when there is a huge focus and challenge in getting new infrastructure in the water for all of the new sites being established.

I didn’t realise that until now. It really is a great piece of work. I was chatting to Nabil on LinkedIn yesterday. I have submitted an abstract for the conference in April, so I may see you in Washington 🤞.

It’s incredible to think that this was from almost 7 years ago. Although I had been working on remanufacture for years previous to this, this report changed my perspective on how to think about value. Still as powerful today as it was back then.

Aerospace MRO faces huge challenges (and opportunities) where they will need to increase capacity as aircraft will be flying longer, as aircraft backlogs, whilst managing broken supply chains. Also tech development is low. Innovation and new manufacturing, automation and digital methods will be key.

Transport and energy sectors are at different stages of circular maturity. For example Aerospace has a thriving MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) sector, whereas offshore and onshore wind are in their infancy - but with big ambitions. #CircularEconomy, #CircularManufacturing, #HighIntegrity#MRO

The ReMake Value Retention Centre (RVRC) will be located within the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland - NMIS (part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult), and the University of Strathclyde, in partnership with the University of Exeter and the University of Sheffield.

Working with a range of organisations from across the private, civic and public sectors, the RVRC will explore how the materials used for various components – such as airplane structures and propulsion, energy transmission systems, and industrial valves and compressor systems–can be reused or remade

However, approx, only 6% of components and are recycled and less than 2% go through value retention processes-like reuse, repair and remanufacture, which aim to maximise product value. This presents pollution and biodiversity challenges, and represents a huge missed economic opportunity.

In high integrity transport and energy sectors, approx. 60-80% of these emissions are locked in when raw materials are extracted and initially processed, meaning emissions goals will only be achieved if a product’s life is extended and value maximised, through CE processes, at the end of life cycle.

The project will adopt a system level approach to solve a system level challenge, and will incorporate business models, policy, standards, culture, skills and investment alongside metallic and composite based ReX technology and inspection processes.

Crucially, it will work across sectors such as aerospace MRO, marine, wind, nuclear, industrial and power generation. Some have aftermarket offerings but face technology and rate increase challenges, whilst other sectors have little consideration for end of use products.

The RVRC will focus on ‘high integrity’ sectors, which are critical to our national infrastructure.
The project aims to keep products and materials at their highest value for as long as possible, for existing products in circulation, and design of new products.
