Thermal paste should cost you a single digit number of dollars. Use a little bit of alcohol to clean off the old stuff, and then enjoy all of the conflicting advice on how to apply thermal paste, all of which is needlessly passionate about smooshing gunk between two surfaces.

Never underestimate the simple stuff if you're short on funds:

-Clean the dust out of your heat sinks or radiators
-Replace the thermal paste on your CPU

Point is, even the ones that shared a CPU were so radically different inside you couldn't just pop a Spectrum tape into an Amstrad and expect it to load, and you couldn't just write the code once and compile for different platforms, like today. Motherfuckers hasd to ACTUALLY PORT games!

In the 80s, there was such a broad spread of different machines (even if similar inside) that games needed to be ported frequently. Or often totally rewritten for the target hardware. ZX Spectrum, C64, Atari 800/400, Amstrad CPC, Sam Coupé.. I'm forgetting some big ones here...

I mean, if you're only counting commercially released official ports, the obvious answer of Doom just isn't even close. I don't think PrBoom running on coffee machines counts as "porting" the game.
