White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

This is political vandalism. Taking a wrecking ball to federal agencies does nothing to make government more efficient but it is already doing grave damage to people and programs throughout the country.

Chris Van Hollen on Trump's latest illegal power grab
YouTube video by Senator Chris Van Hollen Chris Van Hollen on Trump's latest illegal power grab

The president's illegal power grab has thrown our government into chaos — jeopardizing everything from resources for firefighters to child care, small business grants and more.

Thank goodness a federal judge temporarily blocked this outrageous move. We must do everything in our power to stop this ⬇️

"We are still evaluating what, exactly, this ideological freeze would mean for our state and our people in the long-run. But one thing is already clear: These irresponsible actions and conflicting directives from the White House have caused unnecessary confusion, fear amongst Marylanders, and instability in our economy.

"The Trump-Vance Administration is trying to hold back money that has already been approved by Congress. These actions could potentially cost jobs, raise prices, and stifle economic growth in Maryland. What’s more, these resources are intended for programs at places like Maryland schools, Maryland hospitals, and Maryland nonprofits – touching our first responders, seniors, and Marylanders from the Western Mountains to the Eastern Shore and everywhere in between."

"This is not what responsible government looks like – it’s chaos."

What we've seen from the White House today is not what responsible government looks like. Their actions have caused unnecessary confusion and instability across our state.

At home and abroad, we are witnessing a frightening rise in antisemitism. We cannot allow hatred and anger to rule our nation, and must show compassion and respect for our fellow citizens.

Throughout history, the Jewish people have displayed strength amidst hardship and resilience amidst tragedy. In honor and tribute to those we lost more than 80 years ago, we remember the stories of the six million Jewish souls, along with millions of others, systematically murdered by the Nazis.

“Four years ago, the world watched as Donald Trump directed a violent mob that stormed our Capitol, attacking law enforcement and threatening our democratic institutions. The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of our democracy – especially when elections do not turn in our favor. Democrats remain steadfast in our support of the democratic values our country was founded on and will always work to ensure that our democratic processes and institutions continue to function in service of the American people, whether we win or lose.
