I like building robust, complex, useful systems out of bits, atoms, and/or people (with their consent). Unapologetically queer. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ he/him/dad Primarily @jered@metasocial.com currently.

Agreed! Charitably, this help protects the 150k+ Apple employees. It’s better than what other CEOs have done, which is to throw their LGBTQ+ and racially diverse employees under the proverbial bus. Give him some gold-plated shit while groveling, and have the spine to keep your inclusion commitments.

Counterpoint: Apple stood by their diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and said β€œno” when asked to abandon their employees.

I much prefer these CEO-degrading theatrics to walking away from your values, like others have done. This only embarrasses Tim Cook, which he’s paid well to endure.

VMware Fusion and Workstation are Now Free for All Users These powerful desktop hypervisor products are free to all users - commercial, educational, & personal users alike!

In the Future All Food Will Be Cooked in a Microwave, and if You Can’t Deal With That Then You Need to Get Out of the Kitchen As a restaurant owner – I’m astounded at the rate of progress since microwaves were released a few short years ago. Today’s microwave can cook a frozen burrito. Tomorrow’s m…

Just encountered YouTube auto-dubbing videos in a foreign language; it's like the dark side of the Star Trek universal translator. In Trek, all the technology just works perfectly -- more episodes should have been about the universal translator being 97% accurate and creating diplomatic incidents.

I’ve already turned off β€œApple intelligence” and deleted β€œPlayground”. Please don’t add more features I need to turn off.

This says more about the stagnation in laptop tech than anything else. And maybe something about Google Meet.

After 8 years (exactly, since Permabit was acquired) I have finally requested a company laptop... because I can't reliably have a Google Meet with more than 2 people on my older BYOD Mac. Everything else with it is fine. (I would like to run more VMs locally, though, and run some ML inference.)

Somewhat flabbergasted that our relatively new, absurdly expensive Sub-Zero refrigerator has a connected app which will alert me if the door is left open, or when the setpoint is changed... but WILL NOT alert when the device stops working and is not keeping its set temperature.

The headline is overly rosy, but at least there are attempts made.

My office is directly behind that oddly-shaped Seaport building halfway down the article. Our lobby entrance is below sea level. Can’t get to my desk on the 3rd floor when it’s full of water…

Build it!

Everyone should learn the joy of changing trains at Park Street. This is what peak transit system design looks like.

Seattle to San Francisco? Just go Inbound to Park St and change trains to go Outbound to San Francisco! Nothing could be simpler!

Does anyone else get "Severance" vibes from this? Is Google Gemini seriously trying to build the Torment Nexus?

I have complicated feelings about AI training on content (esp. that is completely stolen, not even one copy purchased), but I’m very angry that this same issue led to thousands of individual prosecutions and drove Aaron Swartz to suicide, yet there are less than zero consequences for big AI.

I get it; it’s a permanent structure so it has to meet permanent structure code. But there’s no excuse for not dropping temp portapotties until we can jump through the hoops.

Or could we subsidize retail businesses to have open-to-the-public toilets? I feel like we can think outside the box here.

It’s shooting fish in a barrel to complain about misleading NYT headlines, but β€œshift focus” to where, one wonders? There aren’t enough Musks to go around, and those will be more expensive to the government anyway.
