If they wanted to organize a forum called "University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on the Next President" fine, be biased toward AA. But if they want to adequately represent the reality of the University of Michigan, they need to include more voices from our campuses.

Ugh. Not your fault but only two people from Flint and Dearborn. Our campuses together have as many in state undergrads as Ann Arbor but what, only two out of 29 (and we have to share) people from out campuses asked to contribute. Typical.

Of course most of us teach at and go to colleges where people teach a lot in smallish classes--community colleges and regional publics. George Will sucked in the 1980s when I first read him in the Post growing up and it seems his suckage has grown. So glad canceled my subscription.

It's so sad that the NYT thinks it has to run this to educate it's readers that all colleges aren't Penn, Oberlin and UVA. The comments make me think that interventions won't stick with the typical Times reader

I think the point is, Fuck AI, fuck the UM Admin (especially in Ann Arbor) but by no means is this a done deal. Just because ITS says something doesn't mean the whole institution is on board.

Also the librarian's union (LEO-GLAM) contract has language stating that, for them, "The appropriate use of AI to assist Employees in their work, duties, or tasks shall be made at the discretion of the Employees based on their independent professional judgement, expertise, or discretion."

This really sucks, and I know I teach and UM-Flint, and the bosses in AA sometimes claim/control us and sometimes don't, but I just put a LONG section in all of my syllabi about why students shouldn't use AI. ITS its its own beast. Many of us ignore stuff like this, some of us fight back.

Really? Sure, the people with new bodies are enhanced, but the dudes with guns and the main character's bro are just grunts who have to fulfill their contracts.

Basically you're right. But one of the main themes of the show is corporate power--workers get sent into dangerous situations without proper gear and are asked to do dangerous things all the time. Perhaps that's what Hawley is going for? I know this is an extremely generous interpretation.

Great idea. In my specific context, I think that many regional publics in non red states like mine should start to transform themselves into New New College of Florida like schools-- flexible curriculum, democratic education, community focus, Let 1000 New Colleges Bloom!!
