In amongst all the excitement I fear many have missed this outstanding bit of trolling by Friedrich Merz.

The Chancellor gifted Trump a gilded framed copy of his grandfather’s German birth certificate... reminding Americans that Trump is both the child and grandchild of migrants.

What can the 1975 referendum teach us 50 years on? Fifty years after Britain’s first Europe referendum, its lessons still echo through today’s political and cultural landscape

πŸ•ŠοΈ 50 years ago, Britain chose Europe.

The 1975 referendum showed that hope, not fear, can win.

We can choose it again. ‡️

I had a simple question: Has President Trump increased has net worth since taking the White House? And if so, by how much?

The answer was more surprising than I anticipated. Simply put, he has more than doubled his net worth in 4 months.

Here's how:

On Europe, Labour should reconsider its 'red chains' Labour’s reset with the EU will fail to deliver a significant boost to economic growth. A fundamental refashioning of the EU-UK relationship would require Labour to think again about freedom of moveme...

This sentence feels so taboo. It's liberating to hear it said.

'The future goal of British policy cannot forever be to satisfy the purported and unstated motivations behind a decade-old referendum result.'

Neither Labour nor the Conservatives use First Past the Post for their own elections (at least until they reach the final two).

They rightly feel that it would be ridiculous to have a leader supported by only 23-24% of the party.

Yet they insist on this nonsense for mayoral elections.

Nine months in power: how does Labour’s legislative plan look? Since the election, the government has been busy making new laws, but most people have not noticed. So, here’s a roundup of progress.

Politics isn’t just scandal and shouting matches. Most of it is slow, technical, and absolutely vital – like making sure our laws actually work. Here's what the government’s been quietly up to. Stephen McNair reports.

There are better ways for Rachel Reeves to find the money she needs Richard Murphy’s proposals for simple, rapid tax reforms could easily raise the money Rachel Reeves needs, without penalising the poor

The welfare reforms included in Rachel Reeves’ spring statement have caused anguish among disabled people, charities & the Labour Party.

Prof @richardjmurphy.bsky.social has identified 30 simple changes to the tax system. Just one of them could raise sums needed without breaking Labour’s promises.

Britain’s tax and spend dilemma

Some excellent graphical analysis from the FT as part of the wider conundrum facing the country with a rapidly growing ageing population.

Accompanying the news that β€œthe UK’s public debt burden has surged faster than that of any other big advanced economy since the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic, helping drive up interest payments and limiting the country’s capacity to spend more on defence and care for an ageing population”.

As of last year, more tax revenue was spent on servicing government debt than on education.

More than 20 Metropolitan Police officers broke down the front door of a Quaker meeting house to arrest six women who had met to discuss climate change and Gaza.

It is thought to be the first time in the history of the famously Βpacifist Quakers that police have forced their way into one of their places of worship.

The women, aged between 18 and 38, were sitting in a circle eating hummus and bread sticks on Thursday evening as part of a Ββ€œwelcome meeting” for Youth Demand, which calls itself a non-violent protest group.

I know the right wing media finds it all very difficult so, in an attempt to be helpful, this is what an actual interference with free speech looks like.

UK can’t β€˜re-join’ the EU. We have to start from scratch Psychologically and legally, we have to accept we have no special way back in. But with realism and political will, it's not impossible

I agree, I do really think the seemingly most painful way of reset is long-term the optimal one for the UK, ie rejoin as full members. I set out some of the obstacles for doing so in this @eastangliabylines.co.uk piece: eastangliabylines.co.uk/news/brexit/... but I think it is still the right move.
