There may be some which are worse in absolute terms, but in terms of quality combined with the supposed respectability of the source...

The BBC's "Americast" is the worst podcast in the history of podcasting.

Yeah, I mean you'd think there couldn't possibly any political risk in Starmer using that line of attack, and yet...

The problem is though that the government surely has a duty to take a stand against it, but at best their response has been utterly feeble and at worst they are complicit.

Did you know? Black holes are the simplest objects in science - theyโ€™re built from nothing more than space & time. Iโ€™m giving away 5 signed copies of my paperback A CRACK IN EVERYTHING to a UK person chosen randomly from those retweeting this blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro... @headofzeus.bsky.social

Apart from Brexit, there is also Farage's admiration for and closeness to Trump, who, we should remember, is extremely unpopular in the UK. Of course Starmer has closed off any possible line of attack in that direction either.

In 2019 my view was that the overwhelming moral imperative was to get the Tories out, that doesn't mean people shouldn't have criticised Jeremy Corbyn in the preceding time.

Sure, but I think the time to make that argument is when people are actually making their choice at election time. If people can't criticise and try to put pressure on Labour 3 or 4 years out from an election then you're effectively denying them a voice and a chance of any influence.

I can think of some backbench Labour MPs who would sooner share power with Reform than the Dems.

It's one of the most consequential things the government has done but it seems to have had very little cut through with the public.

@Keir_Starmer

I said that if you enter this country on a small boat, you will face detention and return.

I meant it.

Would anyone care to remind the former Human Rights Barrister Keir Starmer that penalising people seeking asylum for their manner of entry is against international law? Not to mention how grotesque it is that the Prime Minister is sharing videos of people being detained.

OK, but that's an argument to be made at the time of the next election. People are absolutely entitled to put pressure on Labour to change their ways now, and the best way to do that is to threaten not to vote for them.

Unfortunately we have a government snd media which are incapable of meeting the challenge this poses, and at worst are actively complicit.

This is obviously about the US, but it applies to activists large extent to the Right here in the UK.
Certainly in it's increasing tendency towards ethno-nationslism the British Right is becoming more snd more like it's Trumpst/MAGA counterparts.

UK regulation of the internet continues to be mind-numbing stupid.

Ministers have spent years passing laws giving the power to fine tech companies billions if they donโ€™t moderate legal content that could harm certain audiences. Now theyโ€™re threatening fines of billions if they moderate it โ€˜wrongโ€™.

Background checks (or lack of) aren't the issue, these are the people they want.

Trouble is (for Labour) that this tactics seems to be alienating its progressive voters far more than it is appeasing the reform switchers.

Also, too often the pacing and tone of the new version are all wrong. It needs to calm down, let the story breathe and lose a little of the levity.
TBF, some of the old series had the opposite problem re pacing, it tends to drag a bit, especially the 6 parters.

09.08.2025 18:59 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly this. The new version is a re-imagining of the show, not a continuation of it, which is fine, but it would be better not to pretend otherwise.

09.08.2025 18:49 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

All of the companions in the new version are really annoying, especially Catherine Tate, and I have no interest in their families and private lives.

Companions being a romantic interest for the Doctor is creepy.

last one: The Doctor got fed up with the Time Lords, stole a TARDIS, and ran off to see the universe and try to help people. that is all the backstory they need.

'People are angry': Behind the wave of asylum hotel protests The BBC visits sites of protests to hear the voices of those opposed to the hotels and others in support of asylum seekers.

That there has been a deliberate campaign, not just by far-right extremist organizations, but by "mainstream" journalists and papers (then echoed by broadcasters), to foment hatred and violence against asylum-seekers (but also against Muslims), seems not to occur to the author of this BBC piece.

Yes, and the comments on Starmer's tweet are mostly far right types saying it's not enough and they don't trust him, with a few left wingers calling him a racist, so I'm not sure what he thinks he's actually achieving with this nonsense.

I regret to inform you that Starmerโ€™s been tweeting dehumanising videos of migrants again.

These videos have been shown to increase support for Reform, by increasing salience of migration.

He has to go.

i still canโ€™t believe the Supreme Court ruled that when Parliament passed legalisation with the express intention of codifying trans peopleโ€™s rights, what it was actually doing was bringing in the most draconian anti-trans legislation in the western world
