Aye, I'm no less prone to being confidently wrong than the next person (usually a man, let's be honest). I aspire to be at least willing to acknowledge and correct it.

I probably heard this on a podcast or something and then misremembered it, and have been confidently proclaiming my mangled half-truth as fact ever since.

Very glad to have my confident assertion challenged, even though I'm embarrassed to admit it may not hold up very well.

It references Chuck Yeager "pushing through the supersonic envelope". It may be that "pushing *through* the envelope" was never really in common parlance, and I've somehow gotten the wrong idea. According to my understanding of the aeronautical term, "pushing the envelope" doesn't really make sense.

Where Does the Term 'Pushing the Envelope' Come From? Anyone exceeding established boundaries of business, art, or safety is said to be 'pushing the envelope.' Why?

I can't recall the original source for this idea. One post I found online looked promising, but it turned out to be me pushing the same claim on Mastodon last year. This is the best I've been able to find in my short search:

It’s not “push the envelope” but rather “push through the envelope” but nobody says it that way anymore so I’m the one who gets funny looks when I say it right.
