I agree that new unis are doing excellent work and should be cherished. Yet as an academic at not a new uni, who works hard at my teaching and so do my colleagues, this stings a bit.

Ordinary people stopped what they were doing to protect their neighbours. No strangers.
Happy Kenmure Street Day ✊
The problems in our society are not caused by migrants or refugees.
They are caused by an economic system rigged in favour of corporations and billionaires.
If the government wanted to improve people’s lives, it would tax the rich and build an economy that works for us all.
How about we start celebrating higher education as a nation? How about we start shouting, loudly, of the social good of higher education? How about we talk of the nurses, the doctors, the teachers, the social workers, educated at universities? How about we celebrate the artists, the writers, 1/

I'm afraid I have no insight to share, just to say that this sounds like a great project and I hope you pursue it (I'm a modernist, not a medievalist but have an interest in a number of saints and also place stuff so this book idea is super appealing to me personally)

28.03.2025 20:29 — 👍 40 🔁 25 💬 2 📌 5Let us not submit to the vile doctrine of the nineteenth century that every enterprise must justify itself in pounds, shillings and pence of cash income … Why should we not add in every substantial city the dignity of an ancient university or a European capital … an ample theater, a concert hall, a dance hall, a gallery, cafes, and so forth. Assuredly we can afford this and so much more. Anything we can actually do, we can afford… We are immeasurably richer than our predecessors. Is it not evident that some sophistry, some fallacy, governs our collective action if we are forced to be so much meaner than they in the embellishments of life? …
