A pragmatic guide to modern CSS colours - part one Whether you've got a firm grasp on modern CSS colour capabilities, or you're thinking 'I struggle to understand why I should use modern CSS colours at all', then the first part of this article series,...

OK @kevinpowell.co has written what has to be one of the best (if not THE best) practical article to #CSS colors I have read in a while. piccalil.li/blog/a-pragm...

Easy to read, practical examples, and *perfect* for someone like me who's fallen behind and hasn't kept up with all the new stuff.

UX so bad that it's illegal Big tech is divesting from user-centered design, and getting into hot water with the law.

Big tech is laying off user researchers in droves, because it believes that coercing its customers is more profitable than silly things like "making good products people want to buy."

But now the FAFO pendulum is coming around, with Amazon's $2.5B dark pattern settlement and #a11y lawsuits galore.

Within the industry, the only narrative that many hear are the loud voices of the hard-right CEOs who have taken over all the media channels, but the actual individual workers are still having huge impact and are still the ones who actually make things happen. Be sure to amplify that reality.

Gaming with a Facial Difference Video games are a great escape from real life, but having a facial difference is something you don’t escape while gaming.

About 4 years ago I wrote my first piece on @caniplaythat.com for Craniofacial Acceptance Month.

I usually post it again each year as the message is still relevant. People with a facial difference are more than the harmful trope of a scary villain or sad backstory.

A Scholastic First Discovery book titled β€œInternet”. It features a young boy surfing on a keyboard, high above the Earth. He’s steering with a mouse that is inexplicably plugged into said keyboard, and has an excited expression on his face. He’s wearing blue jeans, a baggy red sweatshirt, and a backwards green baseball cap. He’s flanked by five kids also surfing behind him. Above him is a row of small illustrations of a desktop PC and monitor, a satellite, an at symbol, an envelope and letter, and a postage stamp with a picture of Saturn on it.

Periodic reminder that you can usually buy a copy of the funny books you see in memes, and not spend a lot in doing so.

3. Quick shortcuts to help speed up the annotation process for common use cases.

4. In-depth documentation for every type of annotation, and if you don't want to read a whole website, it's integrated into the library (and components themselves). We made this info easy to access and hard to ignore.

This one is NOT for accessibility specialists. It's for everyone!

We deliberately built this library so anyone can pick it up and run with it.

1. There are tools to help designers to organize their canvas and make sense of their flows.
2. Guardrails to help carefully handle problematic patterns.

To hear others tell it, it's the most comprehensive annotation kit there is. It supports iOS & Android (finally). It has everything you would expect from an accessibility annotation kit AND components for tables, lists, live regions, language, video/audio embeds, checklists, gestures, and much more.

Screenshot of a slide titled "BBC Sounds navigation". There are three rows, each containing a bottom app navigation bar. The first shows a row of labeled icons with clear contrast for both the active navigation section and inactive navigation sections. The second row shows a variant of the navigation bar where the inactive navigation sections have a low-contrast color treatment. The third row shows a liquid glass treatment for the navigation, where the contrast between the background and the foreground is difficult to discern.

My main takeaway so far from this @inclusivedesign24.bsky.social talk about BBC app design is that Apple's liquid glass is absolute dogshit when it comes to accessibility 😬
