And to say this is not specific to this thread, which overall makes great points, including this one.

It is easy to say cancelling your sub is imperfect. At the same time, it is the only thing that breaks through. An article can do poorly, but is treated ephemerally or at worst reporter/editor specific. Subscriptions are lasting and actively affect the direction of a paper.

To reframe this a bit, if you want something to change at the NYT or wherever, then it will ONLY happen by cancelling your subscription. Doing nothing will result in no changes, and so people must decide when to use it. I wouldn't blame someone for their reason. Sometimes it is the feather.

There are many ways that people would like to influence the paper, but many options are gone. Removing public editors and ombudsmen, the collapse of alternatives papers, and more corporate minded ownership means that only the bunt options are on left. That's on the paper, not the reader.

I feel uneasy when people are discouraged, even lightly, from the one tool they have. "Nation state" of disparate factions is how companies protect themselves from backlash. Investigative reporters, Cooking, and Wordle all exist to give different people pause when hovering over the "Cancel" button.

There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American.

A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

Wild news about Lance Stroll. Sitting on this for weeks. That he couldn't have made this decision weeks ago or at least before quali? Seems incredibly selfish. Both for Drugovich and rhe engineers.

Yes! Hiding the links, surveys, offering another deal, confusing language about further emails are the worst. Companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into these flows to extract money from people.

I guess in the end I am really skeptical that the 30% savings will be directly passed on to customers coming from the Apple ecosystem.

They'll drive people to use the other options with cost incentives or w/e, but the dark patterns will still exist and they will have to choose between managing "deals" or convenience assuming they are aware of the choice. Most people won't and that means many businesses will take advantage.

A quick and easy way to cancel at any time with zero hassle is the killer feature of Apple's IAP. I cannot stress how much that is worth all these other negatives to me as a customer.

As someone who's worked in news for the last ten years I know Bluesky has the juice when I repeatedly see news events on Bluesky 10, 15, 20 minutes before I get a push notification from @nytimes.com, @washingtonpost.com, etc. Orgs that literally spend tons of time and effort on being first.

This whole time my family thought the game was called "Blueprints", and to be fair they only heard me say the name and watched me play. The pun never even occurred to me till I corrected it.

And that is before you think about people all around the world. Certainly it doesn't make sense for all US verifiers to be shown for people in Japan... and vice versa.

I think this UI is also a bit unwieldy at scale. If we have 50 or 100 verifiers that Bluesky is added, a lot of the meaning is lost. It is one thing if @nytimes.com is only verifying their staff, but should they verify the ambassador to Denmark? Should they? Why shouldn't they?

22.04.2025 00:51 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Overall I think this is a fine feature but if @bsky.app is serious about not being the checkmark authority then individuals need to be able to add and remove any verifiers from the app. Until then it isn't really any different than existing centralized systems.
