One of the most interesting aspects of writing about anarchism in the 1980s-90s is their position re: the Soviet Union as it fell. They had great hope, but also saw the dangers of capitalist transformation. 1/
we would be in a much better state in this country if we stopped focusing on anointing a chosen few working class students into Oxbridge, and instead properly funded all the different sorts of universities that attract students from a wide range of backgrounds already

Manuscript letter from 1987 that reads "Dear Anarchists, A simple plea to the educated and academically-incorporated. Please use your middle-class advantages to fight fascist dictatorship. One word could equall a million riots or you may prefer one riot could equall a million words." Under the text is a drawing of a clenched fist.
And another joy of working with the @freedompress.bsky.social archives is to stumble upon this letter from 1987 which hits way too hard.
10.07.2025 14:38 — 👍 9 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Wildcat strip by Donald Rooum. In the first box, the Free-Range Egghead character, on the left, says "there's no guarantee of reaching anarchy, but we can certainly work towards anarchy". A robot on the right replies "I have a formula for reaching a totally free and equal society in three simple steps...". the Revolting Wildcat character stands between the two speakers, listening to them in turn. In the second box, the robot continues and says "step one: the working class rises against the capitalist class. Step two: the working class seizes power. Step three:". He is cut off by Revolting Wildcat who asks: "Excuse me. What does 'the working class' mean??". In box 3, the robot, now looking evil and holding a knife, replies: "In the context of Step one, 'the working class' means all those who must work in order to live. In the context of Step two, the working class means me".
One of the joys of going through @freedompress.bsky.social archives is of cross-checking things with the newspaper/magazine itself, and stumbling on Donald Rooum's Wildcat comics.

Thanks so much, Sarah! Excited to share this post – it marks my first academic publication 🎉 The article explores anarchists and anti-imperialists during the Second World War. Would love to hear anyone's comments or feedback so please get in touch :)

A snippet from today's archival digs at @iisg-amsterdam.bsky.social. I'm getting increasingly lost in the documents, but this illustrated envelope, dated 30 nov. 1944 and addressed to Marie Louise Berneri and Vernon Richards, is a real standout.
