A new Pew Research poll finds most Americans think AI will worsen people's ability to think creatively and shows a downtrend in perspectives on how optimistic people are about AI's impacts. Only ten percent of people surveyed were "more excited than concerned" about AI.

There seems to be a concerted effort by AI boosters lately to deny this & act like critics are ignorant (or insist it's fine because AI will be smart enough to solve climate change and energy shortages). But energy usage data and projections remain astronomical.

The average data center currently uses the same energy as about 100,000 homes; the largest one under construction at the moment is expected to use the energy of 2 million homes.

I saw this chart on the other site. I don't think ChatGPT alone caused this divergence; other things like interest rates factor in.

But it is revealing of how AI investment, like monetary policy, was intended to help "correct" the leverage workers gained in the hot labor market of early Covid.

In other words, let's flip this on its head from a monocausal explanation to something that places AI in its historical & economic context. AI alone didn't cause stocks to rise while jobs fell; AI was part of a broader systemic effort to tighten the labor market while lifting profits and equities.
