Another chemical triumph for artificial 'intelligence'?

Emeritus Chemistry Prof., University of Liverpool. Still dabbling in molecular electronics. The rest of the time, I'm usually riding a bike, cooking (and eating) or reading. Volunteer at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
Another chemical triumph for artificial 'intelligence'?
19.02.2026 20:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There have been many attempts to design molecules that would give metal-single molecule-metal junctions as near unit quantum conductance as possible, but here's an outrageously unlikely-looking one which succeeds! Remarkable work: doi.org/10.1021/jacs...
19.02.2026 17:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And assuming Ms. Tyers isn't a bot, I'd risk a shrewd bet she was last in church for her own christening.
19.02.2026 16:46 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've heard them, up in Leighton Moss, but I've never managed to spot one. Great photo!
14.02.2026 18:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Didn't know Lamborghini made bikes... (*sarcasm*) www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpo...
12.02.2026 17:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I came off my bike on a massive pothole I failed to spot under trees, broke collarbone and 3 ribs. Friend went to the location next day to photo it for a claim; East Cheshire Council had miraculously mended it.
12.02.2026 17:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Charisma is an overrated characteristic. Johnson had it in spades, apparently; need I say more?
10.02.2026 11:08 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What I really admire about 2FA apps is their chutzpah, asking if youβre enjoying using them. Bit like a water company asking if youβre enjoying using the sewage system.
10.02.2026 10:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Best wishes for a speedy recovery and no after effects! An uncle had prostate cancer so itβs something I also keep an eye on.
10.02.2026 09:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Last night there was a vigil for the first cycling fatality of the year on London's streets. I was there. Here are some thoughts (no paywall).
If this strikes a chord with you, please comment on the post and share.

Since Farage is himself notoriously racist, he presumably approves.
07.02.2026 10:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Went to a concert last night in St Maryβs Woolton, by the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir reinforced by some children, mostly girls, from the local primary school. The enthusiasm of the children in particular was heartwarming.
07.02.2026 10:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, it would be nice to have the choice. Hence, designing infrastructure/built environment so it's not utterly car-centric *would* provide people with a choice, which I for one, as a cycle commuter, would welcome.
30.01.2026 22:33 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I did't know there was another bye-election due in North Minehead. Mr Hilter is showing his age. And... oi still don't look the sound of them there boncentration bamps, either.
30.01.2026 17:35 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Am reading up on weight loss drugs because someone I know asked me if I thought it was reasonable to get a new one, that is still in stage 3 clinical trials but is available cheap, from someone she knows, who (somehow?) obtained it in Europe and is using it himself. Jesus!
30.01.2026 11:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What a triumph of free market capitalism: artificial hormone- based weight loss drugs, to offset the toxic effects of ultra processed, addictive 'foods'. Surely there is a better answer? Like, eating real food? www.theguardian.com/world/video/...
30.01.2026 11:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sad to read of the death a couple of days ago of Fernando Mamede, the hugely talented Portuguese distance runner, breaker of Henry Rono's 10,000 m world record... but flaky when it came to major championships.
30.01.2026 10:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In policy terms it's hard to put a razor blade between Badenoch's ideas and Reform. I'm guessing the only reason there have been so many defectors is that they hope people will forget they were in the last Government as Tories.

26.01.2026 12:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Weβve got dozens round us in Gateace, Liverpool. Noisy buggers.
25.01.2026 17:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Nor was employing that cook from the Liverpool Adelphi hotel.
25.01.2026 17:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We are also having haggis, neeps and tatties. Just hope it doesnβt exacerbate my occasional gout.
25.01.2026 17:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Happy birthday, David. Looks delicious!
24.01.2026 20:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Trump's Davos speech reminded me of something- I've been trying since to figure out what. Now I've succeeded; his speech patterns are similar to those of the drug-addled, dreadful American gangster media employee, Kudzuvine, in Tom Sharpe's 'Grantchester Grind'.
24.01.2026 17:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A pleasant interaction with a driver today; waved thanks to an Audi (!) driver who waited for 20 s or so while I negotiated a dangerous LH bend in primary position, then overtook me leaving a lane. It still does happen, sometimes.
24.01.2026 15:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Was very interested to come across your book here. My late father in law Harry Kelly was a Jolly in 44 Commando in Burma. He was also, earlier, Captain of the Royal Marines football team. He talked more about tossing the coin at Hampden Park once than he ever did about Burma.
23.01.2026 21:25 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Interesting response, and it's a point of view for sure, but I note that you didn't answer my question.
23.01.2026 20:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We had a German teacher, who was shuffled off to our high school after a discipline incident at the associated junior school, where he brought in a katana, unsheathed it and put it on his desk, saying he hoped everyone would now behave. This was the 1970's; stuff like that happened all the time.
23.01.2026 20:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Genuine q- do you mean p, or d?
23.01.2026 20:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0He's succeeded in almost unifying political parties in the UK in their response to this (notably apart from Deform's Farage, who has, predictably, said nothing). I don't think it's ignorance; he's just playing to his base, who will hear his accusations but never hear the refutations.
