If you're voting for the Hugos, Nebulas, Locus, or other awards, please consider this novella about queer love, recovering from trauma, and rewriting your story that CONSISTENTLY resonates with readers. People love this book. More people should know it exists.

Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher! First book in a while that tempted me to stay up late reading to finish (alas, there's too much sleepy in my soul)

Not content with their own tentative freedom, Canto asks for Arminaโ€™s help rescuing their mother from the Huntsmen headquarters where sheโ€™s being held captive.

Text: Hesitent to agree to such a dangerous heist when her own livelihood is already in peril, Armina agrees only to take Canto as far west as she feels comfortable. That is until Renn, a prodigy Huntsman, tracks them down, revealing that the Huntsmen are already on their trail. Armina must decide whether her personal safety---and her lingering feelings for Valaina---are more important than facing a cruel regime to save a single innocent life.

Text: Lonely Castle in the Mirror | Mizuki Tsujimura | Fantasy | Coming of Age
This was an unexpected delight. It had been on my TBR for quite a while, and I put off picking it up for some reason. Iโ€™m so glad I finally did this year. This was heart-wrenching, beautiful, and sweet, and I havenโ€™t cried so hard reading a book in such a long time. Sure, it was 100+ pages of tears at the end, but it was the cathartic kind of crying you sometimes just really need. This book was a stunner, a 100000/10, and everyone should read it at least once.

Text: Piranesi | Susanna Clarke | Fantasy
This was one of the first books I read this year, and when I finished it I looked at my wife and said, โ€œI just read the best book of 2025. In January.โ€ Technically I did rank one book above this, but I consider my top three so closely tied that any given day my favorite could change. Piranesi is a nearly perfect book. Thought-provoking, wonderous, weird, tragic, joyous, and beautifully written. Iโ€™d recommend it to everyone who likes reading. Period.

Text: How to Survive This Fairytale | S. M. Hallow | Fantasy | Horror | Romance
God, this was good. Itโ€™s a fairy tale retelling done right, building up a world that can be nasty and cruel, but at the center of it all there are people who lead with compassion, heart, and who offer encouragement to keep going. This book is ruthless in the best way, and I especially appreciate the way itโ€™s written. I love when authors play with structure and form, and this book is such a good example of what can be done by having fun with writing.

Text: The Summer Hikaru Died, Vols. 1-6 | Mokumokuren | Horror | Coming of Age
This covers all the currently released volumes, and probably all the volumes that will come after. This series is a remarkably tender, devastatingly tragic look at grief and growing up. Itโ€™s also an undeniably queer story, even if that queerness is never overtly named and even when it has nothing to do with romantic feelings. Itโ€™s built into a pervasive sense of otherness and trying to find community in a world where you donโ€™t seem to fit.

Text: The Man with No Shadow | Bonnie Quinn | Horror
I picked this one up after reading a mutualโ€™s 1-star review. At the time, Iโ€™d been looking for a book to scratch the r/nosleep itch that had lodged itself deep in my brain, and the way they described it made it sound perfect. It was exactly what I wanted at that moment, likely helped along by the fact that it did originate on nosleep. I preordered the second one the moment I finished this, and the fact that it doesnโ€™t come out until April makes me want to CRY.

Text: The Killer Question | Janice Hallett | Mystery
Before reading this one, Iโ€™d read Hallettโ€™s The Examiner and The Appeal. I adored the former and found the latter just okay. The Killer Question blew both out of the water and had me reading the rest of Hallettโ€™s backlog as soon as I could get my hands on them. I love pub trivia, I love mixed media stories, I love zany characters. As someone with a deep obsession with the Knives Out franchise, this scratched that itch so well. So twisty, I couldnโ€™t put it down.

This is one of my recent reads, and it blew away most of its competition with ease. The stories here are spooky, thought provoking, and strange while always holding a sense of kindness and wonder at their core.

I first read Ira Levinโ€™s Rosemaryโ€™s Baby back in high school, and I loved it. Iโ€™m actually shocked it took me this long to get to The Stepford Wives. Surprisingly, I DNFed this book once before giving it a second shot, and Iโ€™m so glad I did. It just goes to show that sometimes you have the right book but at the wrong time. This book is a perfect little fairy tale with just the right amount of grotesquery. I, a huge fan of creepy forests and murderous creatures, ate this up in one sitting like I was starving.

Text: Everything Is Tuberculosis. John Green. Non-Fiction

I was apprehensive to pick this one up since 1. I donโ€™t read a ton of Non-fiction and 2. I havenโ€™t read a John Green novel in over a decade. After a friendโ€™s recommendation I read this one, and Iโ€™m really glad I did! This history of the impact and ongoing war against Tuberculosis taught me so much while being incredibly accessible. I especially appreciated its focus on the racist and classist implications of this treatable diseaseโ€™s continued deadliness in the current age.

Text: Strange Pictures --- Uketsu |
Mystery/Horror | Alongside Uketsuโ€™s other novel, Strange Houses, Strange Pictures is a fun, twisty romp with mixed-media elements that really add to the experience

The Backyard Bird Chronicles --- Amy Tan |
Non-fiction | Thereโ€™s something uniquely delightful about seeing famous author Amy Tan go absolutely unhinged about the birds in her yard

Text: Strange Pictures --- Uketsu | Mystery/Horror | Alongside Uketsuโ€™s other novel, Strange Houses, Strange Pictures is a fun, twisty romp with mixed-media elements that really add to the experience Hide --- Kiersten White | Horror | dark, gory, and fast-paced in a double-trouble horror-combo setting: a reality show in an abandoned theme park The Backyard Bird Chronicles --- Amy Tan | Non-fiction | Thereโ€™s something uniquely delightful about seeing famous author Amy Tan go absolutely unhinged about the birds in her yard

The Haar --- David Sodergren |
Horror | I read a lot of horror this year, and I appreciate The Haar for its unique approach of being both incredibly gory and softly romantic

When the Tides Held the Moon --- Venessa Vida Kelley |
Romance/Fantasy/Historical | This book is an absolute stunner of historical romance with beautiful writing and such tender relationships. Cannot recommend this one enough

Cursed Bunny --- Bora Chung |
Horror/Fable | This is a short story collection, and itโ€™s a fantastic mix of the weird, tragic, and wonderful. There are some fables here that feel right out of classic fairytales.

You Werenโ€™t Meant to be Human --- Andrew Joseph White |
Horror | Horrific yet beautiful in its righteous rage. Read the content warnings, then read this one. AJW never misses.

What Stalks the Deep --- T. Kingfisher |
Horror | I adore T. Kingfisher, and this is probably my favorite of the Sworn Soldier Series. I hate caves, so this one hit my eerie buttons perfectly.

The Labyrinth House Murders --- Yukito Ayatsuji |
Mystery | This is my third House Murders book and my second favorite! Theyโ€™re all fantastic, and I really enjoyed putting together the mystery in this one.

Found --- Anthology |
Horror | Both this and Found 2 were SO much fun. I was really craving found-footage horror this year, and this hit this spot like no other.

I had so many books rated 4.5 Stars and up this year, so today I'm posting my honorable mentions. These books could all easily have been in the top 10 this year, it was SO difficult to pick favorites.

Blackblood has been nominated in the following categories:

Best book cover and cover artist, Best friendship, Best morally gray character, Best setting, Best use of tropes, Side Character MVP, Writing the Future We Need: Bisexual or Biromantic Representation, Writing the Future We Need: Gay or Lesbian Representation, Writing the Future We Need: LGBTQ+ Representation, Writing the Future We Need: Mental Health Representation, Writing the Future We Need: Trans or Nonbinary Representation

The category I think Blackblood most excels at is Best Setting! It's a second-world fantasy novel that takes place in a desert country, and most of the narrative is aboard a semi-truck. I worked hard on the world building to combine a swords-and-sorcery aesthetic with diesel-punk grunge!
