Und dann begegnete mir Offes "Interesse des Staates an sich selbst". Das hat in meinem Spatzenhirn wie eine Bombe eingeschlagen und mein Entfremdungsgefühl gegenüber der Politikwissenschaft zumindest so vermindert, dass ich dabei geblieben bin. RIP Claus Offe. Ich bin ihm bis heute dankbar.

Claus Offe: Als ich studierte, war das Otto-Suhr-Institut sehr mit der Staatsableitungsdebatte beschäftigt. Alles, was der Staat tat, schien auf eine Erfordernis des Kapitalismus zurückzugehen . Auch wenn ich es nicht erklären konnte, waren mir diese Funktionalismen sehr unsympathisch.

Das sind gute Punkte. Das Singapurmodell (pol Gegner in den Ruin klagen) funktioniert bei uns so nicht. Der ÖRR scheint rechtlich besser abgesichert, aber den Verlagen mangelt es an einem Geschäftsmodell, was sie womöglich angreifbar macht?

Wäre das hier genau so oder anders?

Und was ist das genau, erfolgreich? Gute Wahlergebnisse, die Umsetzung des Wahlprogramms oder gar die effektive Bekämpfung von Klimawandel und sozialer Ungleichheit?

I fully agree but it is import to recognise that this is the typical pol sci opinion. And our discipline tends to ignore the underlying media infrastructures and its impact. Don't you agree?

None of them. Will send a link once I am back home. My interim conclusion would be that there is a lack of integration of communication/platform studies, democracy and radicalisation research. I.e. research on AFD supporters in Germany, particularly in the East, does not even mention soc media

My, perhaps liberal concern is about the power, and potential to abuse it, we create with stricter platform regulation. The DNS is certainly soft and full of holes but, as I said, I am not convinced that platform regulation beyond what we have right now will bring down extremism to its knees

Yes I know this study, didn't you reference it in your very good co-authored meta study? In spring there was a piece in nature (?) about the role of algos versus preference-based radicalisation on YouTube. Did you that one? I am travelling and can't provide the link

I recall an interesting study on the effects of the radio on election results in the early 1930s. And indeed, votes for the NSDAP went up among supporters in regions with access to the radio but the radio had basically no effect on critics/non party supporters... Preaching to the converted?

Good morning Philipp, we all know that neither platforms nor any other communication media are neutral messengers, but in my view, we underplay the role of right wing political movements if we only focus on the tech side and ignore the substance of people and their ideas.

It is still a blaming the messenger kind of argument. It may underestimate the anger that fuels right wing extremism

I agree, all frustrations are pre-framed in one way or another. Is the assumption that the diversity of party-specific world views is less pronounced today or less relevant regarding dominant topics? And why would that be?

What I noticed is that MP's narratives are typically about encounters they had in their constituencies. People who shared their frustration about something. And that something often refers to side-effects of migration. Badly managed migration, one might argue. Or not.
