Recently a researcher, Phil Vicini, was looking for information on his uncle, James Soisson, in the University Archives.

While doing some deep digging in our digital collections, Vicini spotted a familiar face in this image of a CFA class–Andy Warhol! Seen pictured second from the left, Warhol is sitting across a table from his friend, NYC roommate, and fellow artist Philip Pearlstein.

This photograph was previously unidentified so even the archivists were surprised–proving there’s always something new to see in the University Archives!

Today we’re remembering @cmu.edu alumnus #AndyWarhol on his birthday! 🎂

Can you find him in this archival image? 🔍

Warhol (BFA 1949) attended Carnegie Tech in the late 1940s before leaving his hometown of Pittsburgh for New York City.

DYK the paperback book revolutionized reading? 📖

In the 1930s, PenguinBooks (UK) & Pocket Books (US) introduced affordable, portable books that made literature accessible to the masses. These lightweight editions fueled reading on the go and expanded access to education.

Prior to arriving at @cmu.edu, many first-year students have never encountered an academic library. Over the last year, our librarians have worked to address this, turning one-off orientation sessions into a dynamic, personalized introduction to the Libraries’ offerings.

COMBEE by Edda L. Fields-Black

COMBEE by Edda L. Fields-Black

“The month after I signed an advance contract to write COMBEE, the world shut down, because of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Carnegie Mellon’s Hunt Library helped me to keep going as I dove into my primary and secondary source research, even ordering books and having them delivered to my home when the library was closed. And, in the final weeks as I made final changes before COMBEE was sent to the printer, CMU’s Hunt Library helped me identity documents and quotations therein so I could finalize my endnotes.” - Edda Fields-Black, Professor, Director of Dietrich College Humanities Center
