If you're accepting the framing that Charlie Kirk was killed by someone to his left because of his politics, you're accepting the framing his poltical allies have pushed into the discourse because it's convenient for them.
The reality of violence like this in America is that it is mostly done by someone with completely incoherent ideology, and when it is done by someone with a coherent ideology it is almost exclusively done by someone on the right. The guy who tried to shoot Trump last summer was much closer to being a supporter than a Harris voter and in the end was mostly just a lunatic trying to shoot someone for attention. That's the main ideology of public violence in America
Don't start talking about motive or ideology before there is at least a suspect, or else you're doing a lot of people's work for them. There's a good chance the reality of this situation is much weirder than is assumed, and if it isn't, you don't lose anything by being cautious.

Wrote a little thing on Facebook for my non-online friends and relatives about caution around Charlie Kirk’s killing. It’s public so feel free to share it with your non-online friends and relatives too.

Former critics who once demanded Cuomo resign are now endorsing him A POLITICO review of Cuomo’s touted endorsers found that few of them stood by him in 2021.

This whole, "sexual assault and harassment is bad when Trump does it, but ok when our side does it," is sending a really clear message that the old guard of Democratic leadership only cares about women when it's politically advantageous.

Anybody watching this Trump program knows that it’s all fiction & performance. His “instincts;” his “deal-making;” his status as “the ultimate CEO.” It’s utter fiction. It’s awful that media figures w/a reasonable level of sophistication pretend that the silly stories from Trump camp are credible.

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.

some people confuse the "ruthless pursuit of power *in order to win advance one's political projects, principles, and values*" Realism with "ruthless pursuit of power that betrays the absence of political projects, principles, and values" Realism. there's nothing serious or adult about the latter

Supreme Court walks a tightrope as it confronts Trump’s power moves The justices appear to be trying to avoid a direct conflict with the Trump administration while also blocking certain presidential actions.

To the #BrokenPost, shredding the Constitution in a fascist, authoritarian coup is a "power move."

Trump administration cancels plans to develop a bird flu vaccine The Department of Health and Human Services is ending a $766 million contract with the vaccine company Moderna to develop an mRNA vaccine for flu strains with pandemic potential, including bird flu.

22 years ago I pivoted from working on antibiotic resistance to pandemic viruses.

Since then, I've argued that if we care about saving US lives in expectation, advance capacity for producing bird flu vaccine offers by far the greatest expected return on investment.

...

We were so goddamn close.

"But even as the Trump administration has carried out a series of controversial deportation flights to other nations, deportation totals are roughly the same as they were during President Biden's last year in office."

If you’re basing your argument around the idea Dems didn’t do this you’re wrong.

As someone who very much thinks that the Biden story matters a lot, it's so awesome that the press is completely uninterested in the 5+ times (off the top of my head) that Trump just openly has no idea what his administration is doing.

Substack paid Matt Yglesias 250,000 tp start a newsletter so he can spread his smart takes like “DEI is bad.”

Am I saying that fool is a Nazi?

No. But I’m saying it is different than other platforms that simply allow Nazis.

They pay the people they want to launch newsletters. A LOT OF MONEY.

In some ways Newsom's trans athlete ban feels like just another day for Dems, but in others it feels like a watershed. The biggest state in the country just caved to Trump immediately to attack trans people. I've been hoping Dems wouldn't go the way of UK Labor, but it's looking that way.

The reason all of this matters & why I’m writing this right now is not to say that a “mature” fascist state is inevitable, but that the best way out at this point lies in organizing, mass protests, & widespread disruption of systems & processes. In short, we must become unruly & ungovernable.

The best example of the blurring of state & vigilante violence is the masked maybe-uniformed-maybe-not “ICE” officers.

Are they ICE?
Doesn’t seem to matter.
It’s treated as lawful.

Please recognize this threat for what it is.

This is what fascist state capture looks like in practice—a pervasive blurring of the boundary between state & vigilante violence under the aegis of the law.
