Coding used to be a wonderful, creative and worthwhile hobby and occupation. Now the LLM bros are sucking out the joy of the craft to make money.

You don't become a chef by using a microwave to heat up premade meals that someone else made any more than you become a developer by using LLMs to write code.

I worry that we're raising a generation of people who only know how to consume technology, and have no relationship with the making of it.

I worry about what will happen when they have done this for a couple of years, and then they need to go out and find a job. I worry that they will not be hirable. I worry that whatever love for the craft I try to imprint on them will ultimately be lost to the tech bros' grip on the industry.

...that they don't need to learn any skills to do this job. And that they don't really need to concern themselves with the details around the implementation. Just trust the hallucinating bullshit machine and let it write the code for you. It won't take long and it'll probably look great!

I keep telling my students that being an LLM power user isn't going to get them hired. Their knowledge is. As such, I try to steer them towards educational activities and sources of information that will help build this knowledge. It sucks that the tech business is constantly telling them...

Where I work, we have a lot of different programmes, not only in development but also in marketing and sales to name a few. It's remarkable how hard LLMs is being pushed on these students, not only by guest lecturers but by teachers who have been bitten by the bug.

Working as a teacher has me feeling all kinds of things about LLMs.

There is such a shift in the mindset of students and educators now where the final product is somehow more important than the knowledge gained, probably because that is what all the tech companies are pushing on us.

Actually, I work as a front-end development teacher in higher education (college/university level) right now.

I worked as a dev up until March this year, though, and I was working in a team at that time. We had the autonomy to choose our tools and using LLMs wasn't considered at any point for us.
