Ang. public service i Sverige, idag lyssnade jag på ett detaljerat program på SR om europeiskt militärt försvar, med journalister som diskuterade attityder i Frankrike och Tyskland. Noll chans att ett kommersiellt nyhetsorganisation skulle producera något så djupgående, särskilt inte på radio.

UK public think asylum makes up 33% of all immigration to UK. Actual number? 14%.

Estimated numbers by party voters:
Reform: 46% (+228% too high)
Conservatives 39% (+178% too high)
Labour 26% (+86% too high)

Reform voters wildly uninformed about the one issue they consider central to Britain.

UK Office of National Surveys shows immigration to UK in 2024 fell to 345,000. 60% LOWER than 2023. But Ipsos/British Future poll shows 56% of respondents thought immigration had INCREASED 2023-24. 17% thought it was same. Only 14% said it was lower. UK public seriously misinformed on immigration.

1) In Sweden, I sit and watch the rapid embrace of the US consumer orgy holiday known as #BlackFriday without protest from the anti-immigration right, who wet their collective national identity pants whenever they see a shop sign in Arabic on a small side-street.

14) And consider how that small business owner is surrounded by countless mega-stores covered in ads using the "right" foreign words, leveraging the "right" foreign holiday to sell the "right" foreign products. All without protest from the self-appointed national culture police.

13) On #BlackFriday, spare a thought for the immigrant small business owner accused of undermining national culture, values and language because they are selling the "wrong" foreign food in a shop with a sign in the "wrong" foreign language.

12) And what is the “wrong kind” of culture? It usually means cultures springing from predominantly non-white, non-Christian nations and regions. Being over-run by US culture? Well, that seems OK. So, the "concern" for local culture and language is just fake, cynical bullshit.

11) What those who defend the flood of US cultural goods in Europe by using the “cultural proximity” argument are really saying is that they don’t care if local culture and language are eroded by a foreign culture...so long as it’s not eroded by the “wrong kind” of culture.

10) There’s nothing “local” in countries like Sweden about #BlackFriday. There’s nothing “local” about Starbucks. There’s nothing “local” about Seinfeld re-runs. There’s nothing “local” about the English language.

9) Now, the "it's closer to us" argument is interesting. Not because it makes sense, because it clearly doesn’t. It’s interesting because it exposes the complete bullshit of the faux concern over the erosion and death of “local culture” and “local language.” It's just trolling.

8) When I raise these issues, a common response is that, yes, #BlackFriday, Halloween, Starbucks, US television programs and US films aren’t from Europe, but US culture is “closer” to European culture than the cultures of, say, Syria or Somalia, and so they aren’t as "damaging."

7) So, where's the outrage? The political concern for “local cultures and language” being swamped by this foreign invasion? #BlackFriday is part of a spread of US consumer culture w/significant impact on everything from increasing household debt to the demise of local businesses.
