ApexRMS joined this initiative 3 years ago when we teamed up with @westernu.ca to model how land cover change affects butterfly populations. That includes mapping fine-scale snow cover patterns using satellite imagery + remote sensing.

Instead of our usual canoe trek, we enjoyed an eco-tour through the Haliburton Forest. This included a paddle, canopy walk, and a deep dive into the forest's history. A brush with dog ticks (a first for us!) also reminded us how climate is reshaping ecosystems.

Originally built with Random Forest and MaxEnt models, ecoClassify will soon support Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for enhanced raster image classification. The team is actively optimizing the algorithm to make AI-driven, GIS-based classification faster and more accessible for users.
