ApexRMS joined this initiative 3 years ago when we teamed up with @westernu.ca to model how land cover change affects butterfly populations. That includes mapping fine-scale snow cover patterns using satellite imagery + remote sensing.

This July, our teammates @afilazzola.bsky.social and Hannah Adams joined researchers in Alberta’s Kananaskis Country to help monitor an alpine butterfly and its host plant—a project that’s been running since 1995.

WISDM is an open-source tool that brings modern species distribution modeling (SDM) workflows into the SyncroSim framework, turning raw data into informative maps faster than ever before.

As usual, reconnecting in person was the real highlight. Some of us met face-to-face for the first time! We’ve come home recharged and ready.

Instead of our usual canoe trek, we enjoyed an eco-tour through the Haliburton Forest. This included a paddle, canopy walk, and a deep dive into the forest's history. A brush with dog ticks (a first for us!) also reminded us how climate is reshaping ecosystems.

This year was themed around growth—of our company, our tools, and our team. We explored this through a series of insightful sessions focused on company structure and strategy, enhancing the reach and availability of #SyncroSim, and setting our software development priorities.

Last week our team unplugged from screens and stepped into the forest as we gathered in the Haliburton Highlands for our annual in-person staff retreat 🌎

EcoClassify is already being applied to real-world use cases, including wetland mapping in Ontario and agricultural land classification in the Greater Toronto Area.

More to come as we level up geospatial AI!

Originally built with Random Forest and MaxEnt models, ecoClassify will soon support Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for enhanced raster image classification. The team is actively optimizing the algorithm to make AI-driven, GIS-based classification faster and more accessible for users.

The session covered foundational modeling approaches and hands-on exercises with Cell2Fire, FireSTARR, and Prometheus fire growth models. Recent improvements in SyncroSim 3 and the BurnP3+ suite enhanced the experience and created a smoother workflow.
