In fact, I read that at least one theatre advertised that they'd pay you the prize money if you went to a movie and missed a quiz show call during it. It was probably a marketing gimmick since it'd be hard to prove in that era, but it goes to show the grip those shows had on society for a bit.

It actually wasn't a poll. At the time, there were radio shows where they'd call numbers from the phone book and whoever answered would win cash if they answered a question right. They got so popular that it hurt bars and theatres because nobody wanted to go out during the show and miss a call.
