I think pay bathrooms just punish poor people and shouldn't exist

I've always been told the pay bathrooms in Europe were good because it kept them "nicer". In my experience in Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Osnabrück they have all been similar in cleanliness to public restrooms in the US. They've all smelled pretty bad too.
