The state of Tennessee tortured and murdered Byron Black yesterday. I’m trying to find words to understand and explain why it happened and what it all means. This is how I'm thinking and feeling my way through it. 🧡

I think we should be honest that the *Greatest Generation* people [who were white] fought fascism ABROAD while they overwhelmingly supported fascism AT HOME. And frankly, those chickens have come home to roost now.

What LLM boosters promise: a future where AI takes care of menial chores, and you can spend more time with loved ones

What the product actually does: talk to your loved ones for you so that you can focus on your menial chores

Oh, man…I can’t wait to hear Yglesias et al blame this on Black people and also tell us it’s a good thing because it polls well.

A few years ago I read Elsa Tamez's fascinating commentary on the book of Ecclesiastes, "When the Horizons Close: Rereading Ecclesiastes." It's not the kind of book that I quoted from a lot, but it is one that I think about. wipfandstock.com/978159752855...

The trains got way worse, but the state media TOLD everyone they were running on time.

We're seeing a lot of this, like with how we're all going to be healthier, somehow, without vaccines, testing for food-borne pathogens, cancer research, Medicare or Medicaid, reproductive healthcare, and so on.

balancing hope Last time we had a story about how we got dogs, who turned out to be a gift from a giant in spirit world to help us out with the monsters we had called forth in a misguided attempt to deal with hunger...

A marginalized man turned out to be a manitou and killed the monster terrorizing a village. But what about the next one?

We’re back with Gramsci, now being the time of monsters, and we need hope because as fast as we take down one, others pop up.

I know it’s been said before, but tech leadership really broke a lot of people. I wonder if it’s unique? Like in the 50s, was the CEO of General Motors convinced that he knew everything, or is this a new failure of capitalism specific to software businesses?

I think a lot about how even in movement circles (as you know) so much of the work is, today, gendered, and even if the few cis men who end up in those circles have done some work we are still not as likely to notice it until somebody points it out to us.
