Sometimes, when lethal forces are against you, social movements must call on the power of metaphysical forces. My essay on biblical scifi: bibleandcriticaltheory.com/issues/vol-1...
Newitzโs book is GREAT for thinking about religion.
Itโs a profound book that offers resistant hope to those who believe the political IS personal. Change comes through collective action, community connection, and refusing to cede to anyone who thinks themself a Great Man!
5: The novel comments on history. We donโt need to literally edit a timeline: who tells history determines our present and future timelines. Newitz contrasts queer wo/men's โcollective actionโ to a โGreat Manโ approach to time travel. This echoes academic biblical debates on historical criticism.
24.06.2025 19:02 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Image of Roman-era figurine of Isis Aphrodite (from the Met); statue is a of women, bare-chested with braided hair and a large fanning hat
4: Thereโs a sacrifice! The ritual echoes Christian baptism: โDIE AND LIVE AGAIN!โ It is offered to a goddess al-Lat in ancient Nabatea. Women's leadership in this cult parallels texts we have from the Roman-era cult to the Egyptian goddess Isis. Newitz even notes al-Lat was elsewhere known as Isis!
24.06.2025 19:02 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 03: Several major characters are Jewish. We see them connect experiences to Jewish rituals and celebrations, including Passover Haggadah or Shabbat dinners. We also see them facing anti-Semitism. Newitzโs novel represents lived Jewish experience as both a religious and cultural identity.
24.06.2025 19:02 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Image of feminist punk performers, imitating riot grrrrl and bringing to life one of the songs from Newitz's book.
2: โI write pamphlets about how Iโm fucking an angelโ (Soph).
Newitzโs depiction of Spiritualism shows how women have long made positive associations between sex and spirituality. Using religious language allows women, including queer women!, to share pleasure and hide it in plain sight.
1: Newitz depicts Anthony Comstockโs 1890s morality crusades. In the novel, Comstock cries about โfilthโ and โcorruptionโ that โassault womanhood.โ He calls enemies โsinners.โ As Pellegrini + Jakobson point out: Christian rhetoric frames Comstockโs obscenity laws.
