Pottery rhyton in the shape of a boar’s head: The lower part is sculpted to resemble the realistic head of a boar, complete with detailed eyes, ears, snout, and tusks, giving it a lifelike and expressive appearance. The upper section flares outward like a wide funnel and is painted with red-figure decoration.
A stunning #Greek rhyton (drinking cup) in the shape of a wild #boar's head, 350-320 BC.
Vessels such as this one were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, the content had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down
On display at Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe

Does the Tutor, who is arriving and entering through a door in the background, realise what is about to unravel?
Oh, to have been in Pompeii #OnThisDay - 18 June - in 1828, when the House of the Dioscuri (VI.9.6) offered up a host of its fabulous frescoes to the eyes of the excavators, including this one of Medea! #Pompeii #Archaeology 🏺

At the left of the main decorative panel, Dionysus rides in a chariot pulled by tigers. Preceding him is a procession of his followers, Maenads and Satyrs, embellished with detailed depictions of exotic animals, including lions, elephants, and even a giraffe. The decoration on the sarcophagus' lid shows the birth of Dionysus. Satyr heads - styled in the manner of theatrical masks - act as decorative finials to the lid.
#ReliefWednesday - I do adore the vibe of an over-the-top Roman sarcophagus, so this example from Via Piave, Rome, with its 'Triumph of Dionysus' decoration is a cracker: ca. AD 190. #Archaeology #Art 🏺

A glass bowl with vibrant, multicolored patterns including blue, orange, yellow, green, and white. The design features bold, angular lines and intricate textures, and the bowl is illuminated , enhancing the colors and creating a glowing effect against a light background.
Fascinating world of ancient #glass: A magnificent #Roman striped mosaic bowl, made of preformed rods and canes fused on or in mold. Timeless beauty!

What are the chances that I found *another* adorable boar askos? Well, pretty good, considering where I hang out. The second pic below shows the spout - really just a hole - in his mouth. Replicas are definitely going to be available in our imaginary museum store. 🏺

'Strigilated' lenos (bathtub) sarcophagus, with the strigilated wavy lines on the front, representing the waters of the rivers of the underworld, with a slim amphora in the middle with initials. Large fully maned lion heads stand out in high relief on either side, each lion with prey in its paws: on the left, an antelope, and on the right (modern restoration), a ram. We can just barely see the animal tamers directing the lions on either side.
Shot taken from the left side of the lenos, showing the bearded, older animal tamer, using a sharp prod on the lion to get it to capture and kill the antelope. On the unseen right side, the animal tamer is a young man.
For #sarcophagussaturday, a gorgeous lenos (bathtub) sarcophagus, from the #Torlonia Collection, with the familiar heads of lions on each side. But in the side view, you can see the lion is being guided by a 'mansuetarius', an animal tamer, to entertain the crowds. 🏺

Australia’s 2025 election is more than a political outcome. It is a philosophical reaffirmation that power, when untethered from fear, returns to its rightful source. The people. In casting their votes, Australians did not just choose leaders. They reclaimed authorship of their future.
