1️⃣ Young women are more likely to be attacked based on their gender.
2️⃣ Women youth party members are more likely to indicate that this is a reason for them to resign from politics.
▶️ A first leak in the political pipeline that threatens equal representation and democratic inclusion.

Using data from a survey of elite politicians in Germany and Switzerland, the results of a causal mediation analysis show a positive direct effect of Openness that holds independent of a mediating influence of political ideology.

The first pathway proposes a direct effect (Openness ⬆️, Conscientiousness ⬇️). The second pathway runs indirectly through the effect of these personality traits on MPs' general ideological positions

We introduce the idea that the personality of MPs constitutes an important additional explanatory variable for their dedication to gender equality issues and argue that Openness and Conscientiousness shape MPs' positions toward gender equality through two different pathways:

Personality and political representation—How personality traits shape MPs' attitudes toward gender equality This study analyzes whether the personality traits of Members of Parliament (MPs) affect their attitudes toward the representation of gender equality issues. Based on the Big Five personality traits,...

Politicians' personality traits affect their attitudes towards gender equality.

In a new paper in LSQ, Corinna Kroeber and I show that the higher MPs score on the Openness trait, the more they support the representation of gender equality.

The paper shows that in modern-day parliaments, there are still deeply-rooted traditional attitudes towards gender equality and what roles men and women should play. This constitutes a major impediment to the achievement of gender equality.

New publication 💹

What are politicians’ attitudes towards men’s engagement in the representation of gender equality?

My new paper in @wepsocial.bsky.social shows that gender equality is still perceived as a policy field that is primarily suited to women MPs.
