3 Lesser-Known Logical Fallacies People often point out logical fallacies like the straw man and ad hominem. Here are three others that are prevalent but rarely discussed.

It is becoming more common for people to call out logical fallacies by name. Some logical fallacies, however, are prevalent and yet rarely discussed. Read about 3 of them in my latest article for @psychologytoday.com:

Imagine someone says, โ€œPlate tectonics is just a theory. I have my own theories.โ€ Someone replies, โ€œIn science, โ€˜theoryโ€™ means a well-supported explanation.โ€ If the first person brushes this off by saying, โ€œDonโ€™t be pedantic,โ€ theyโ€™ve committed the appeal to stone fallacy. 4/5

27.11.2025 13:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Recently, this fallacy often appears as โ€œYouโ€™re being pedantic,โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re splitting hairs,โ€ or โ€œYouโ€™re arguing semantics.โ€ Sometimes a person does get stuck on irrelevant details; but at other times, those โ€œhairsโ€ are crucial details to address. 3/5

27.11.2025 13:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

People may say these things because they donโ€™t want to engage in a debate. Thatโ€™s fine, and not necessarily a fallacy. After all, we donโ€™t owe everyone who makes a claim a full discussion. But we should not pretend these statements are rebuttals; theyโ€™re just conversation-enders. 2/5

You commit the appeal to stone fallacy when you dismiss a claim as absurd without giving any reason or evidence. It can show up like โ€œThatโ€™s nonsense,โ€ โ€œBe serious,โ€ or โ€œThatโ€™s obviously false.โ€ 1/5
