I think that joke landed differently at the time because Joe Biden really was not a big deal. It wasn't on anyone's mind that he would run for president. The joke was that Leslie was lame for being obsessed with him. But now the joke lands kinda weird.

But now those "small government" people ARE mean-spirited towards people (see: SNAP freeze) and also are using "traditional conservatism" as a front for fascism. Many Ron Swanson types today have been swept into MAGA. The jokes aren't so funny now because it kinda legitimizes those guys.
