Depends on your take on morality.
Mine is the choice that minimizes suffering. Figuring out what choice that is can be easy or complex, depending on the situation; it will always be subjective.

Because people care about what happens to others.
We have empathy for one another.
This, btw, is why we need to stop electing sociopaths to positions of power.

Morality is a human concept.
It likely evolved on the steppes, as being shunned by the group would mean less access to breeding.
Empathy is a lot older; dogs, cats, even birds all show that.
