β€˜Death by a thousand cuts’: the people who could face deportation under Reform As party’s rise fuels fears over future visa rules, people share how the lives they have built are in jeopardy

The current tragedy is that, while Reform's proposals are worse, the current government is currently enacting policies which leave people scared about their future, children at risk of losing a parent, all to "combat" Reform's policies to achieve the same goal.

This by Mahmood is frankly not only disgusting, but also massively disingenuous. It equates seeking asylum with illegality, there's nothing illegal about seeking asylum no matter the route. It ignores that Labour's policies penalise those in need of protection, and plays to hard right rhetoric.

Sharon Camp, Mother of the β€˜Plan B’ Contraceptive Pill, Dies at 81

Anyone who’s ever used emergency contraception or gains peace of mind by even having it on hand owes Dr Camp a debt of gratitude. What a force.

(Also, I just learned one reason the FDA rejected it at first was that they said the name Plan B was too glib!)

Great obitβ€”no paywall.

I figured something out. The large body of self-help work around gratitude is not without harms. It largely ignores the historical use of gratitude as a tool to silence, subjugate & chain self-actualisation in minorities & immigrants where feeling grateful is an expectation for peaceful existence.

Dear GOD if you want to save money in the asylum system

1. LET ASYLUM SEEKERS WORK

2. FAST TRACK STATUS FOR EVERYONE FROM CLEARLY UNDAFE COUNTRIES like Sudan, Syria, etc

3. Run an asylum accommodation system that is NOT FOR PROFIT #r4today

Millions to receive free electricity in 2026 thanks to Australia’s solar boom | TechCrunch Australia now has so much solar power that the government will require utilities to sell customers free electricity for three hours per day.

Australia’s solar revolution is paying off: starting July 2026, millions will get up to 3 hours of free electricity daily thanks to surplus solar power. A major step toward equitable, renewable energy for all.πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

One thing I find quite funny about this idea of vote Labour or get Reform, is that it ignores that a Lib Dem/Green coalition is becoming a genuinely viable alternative, and one which is pretty attractive to voters who want a positive plan for the future which doesn't involve demonising others. 6/

05.11.2025 18:46 β€” πŸ‘ 64    πŸ” 6    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Labour's whole pitch at the moment is "better terrible than disastrous", and that isn't exactly a winning strategy when they could be positioning themselves to actually provide voters with a positive reason to support them.
Without that many will vote for Lib Dem and Greens. 1/

Jesus and I agree that starving the poor so you can build yourself golden bathrooms and golden ballrooms is evil. Anyone who does that shall burn for eternity. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Thanks,

It is an important question. I think in large part from a western perspective it's because of the complicity/support of our own governments (i.e. USA/UK) in what's going on.

Only full abolition of two-child benefit cap will substantially cut poverty, thinktank says Resolution Foundation says half-measures would have little or no meaningful impact on child poverty rates

The govt and the electorate must understand that child poverty is not only hugely detrimental in the present. It shapes population wellbeing for generations to come. The evidence is so clear on the lifecourse health effects of poverty.

Have you noticed this increasingly common peekaboo strategy lately here and in the US?

1. Say something outrageous.

2. Wait a bit for it to spread so that the unsayable becomes acceptably sayable.

3. Walk it back.

4. Boom! Overton Window shifted.

Home Office 'squandered billions' on asylum accommodation, MPs say "Flawed contracts" and "incompetent delivery" left the department unable to cope with demand for asylum accommodation, a report by MPs suggests.

Costs of asylum accomodation are down to firms making vast profits off of providing poor quality for people seeking safety and Home Office cruelty and ineptitude. It is not the fault of those forced into using them by a system which doesn't give them a choice. #r4today

Worth mentioning, there's nothing illegal about seeking asylum. Indeed the need for those doing so to use irregular routes is recognised in law, provided they present themselves, as they have to, to seek asylum to the relevant authorities. This is a grotesquely misleading comment by the Home Office.
