I just finished Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which has multiple subplots about people struggling to own _real animals_ instead of artificial ones—my first thought on reading this (accidental?) thread was that I'd somehow been transported into Dick's dystopian world.

It was The Hobbit, Rankin/Bass (1977). I was eight years old. This weird animated feature appeared on TV (November 27, 1977, according to Wikipedia) and it _changed my life_. For one thing, it got me hooked on language and epic tales, leading to a few degrees in ancient history and classics.
