Anora is not that good… I don’t understand why people think it’s great. Maybe they haven’t seen great films before?

I can look beyond that, and I do appreciate the acting… but I do fundamentally think this film is a man’s idea of this woman, her sexuality and her personhood, and is very far from actual women, their sexuality and personhood. This is not a critical rep to me.

The treatment of Anora’s personhood and her role as a sex worker felt detached in a lot of ways. Some other people wrote about it more in depth ie angelfoodmag.com/romance-labor

Sure, I think this film has a strong male gaze, both in the writing and filming. Compare the treatment of female sexuality in Anora vs The Substabce.. which was much more critical of the sexualization of women. Anora shows a very male understanding of female sexuality imo.

I agree lol… people really don’t even have a rudimentary concept of the male gaze… and can’t read just how much this film relished in the subjugation of women. It’s sad. But not expected from America.

Look up the concept of the male gaze and get back to me on that one.

Except for the multiple times in the film she is offended for being identified as a sex worker.

Anora is a master class in the male gaze and was so clearly written and directed by a man. You feel it throughout the film. Another case of women’s experiences being presented poorly by a man, celebrated in a patriarchal society.

The role, like women’s roles in society, was well acted though.

Male fantasy film Anora beating out The Substance is just a little too on point… but not sure why I expected any different.

Anora was another male fantasy film that was well acted but honestly kind of bad.
